when i first moved in to this apartment, mostly because of the location of the cable jack, i set my computer up in the corner near the window. there is a shelf beneath the window, built into the wall, and i put out some knicknacks n personally significant objects along it ( Read more... )

"i've mentioned my unease about it to others and they have shook their heads at me"

I hate to admit that my own animal-lover tendencies do not apply to the phylum Arthropoda, i.e., insects, spiders, and crustaceans. I stand outside Petsmart and literally cry over the dogs who are there waiting to be adopted…but I would never cry over a spider, unless it was in fear.

For what it's worth, I think it's really admirable that you're willing to extend your "live and let live" philosophy to creatures that look so, well, alien. You're a better man than most!

Always horrible to injure an animal even if's just a spider or something like it. I crush it quickly to let it out of its misery. I have also killed mice (injured and non-injured) and snakes a few times, and I'm shaking like an aspen leaf afterwards. Hate it. But kids and venom don't mix well and I don't like mice indoors. Have tried to capture mice in order to let them out far away, in the woods perhaps, but I've never been successful. My cousin has a contraption that works; I need to learn how she does it.

You probably provided an environment that let the little guy live a lot longer than the average spider, so cut yourself some slack. In most homes he would have been squished on sight.

As for myself, in nice weather I put stray spiders outside and during cold weather I usually move them to a houseplant. I'm not sure what good that does, but that's the procedure.

And, I don't remember exactly, but I suspect that over the years there have been some causalities during transportation. :/
