I'm still on the hunt for a flash. Been looking at the sb800, sb600, sb 26, sb 28, and the vivitar 283,285,285HV. At ~$140 the sb600 is within range. I can't at the moment justify buying it though, especially with the reviews the vivitars get and their given bang for buck. I've been trying to get the hang of it using dad's agfatronic 240b. The flash is very simple with one output level. So far I've just burned everything out, mainly because I'm shooting spontaneous situations in which I do it the digital way, click first and think later. I've become very adept at using my manual 50mm F/1.4 AI-s lens and absolutely love it. I much prefer it over the kit lens in terms of speed, but that's got everything to do with the amount of time I've put in using the 50mm. The G lens form-factor is a terrible idea IMHO, of course using the command dial is as quick if not faster than adjusting the ring, it's negligible. I aim to have pictures posted as soon as we get a server going at the new place.
