"You know," Ben begins that night while they're in bed, face blank, voice mild. "There's something your father said that I really have to ask you about."
"Hmm?" Toby asks, his eyes closed, body burrowing deeper under the covers seeking warmth. "What?"
"Toby Jug?" Ben says, lips quivering, teeth biting into the side of his cheek. "I mean… seriously?"
Toby rolls over to glare at him. "Shut up. I like it-"
Ben bursts out laughing, an almost hysterical hint to his laughter. Toby frowns, not impressed at all.
"-and I want you to know that I hate you. A lot. Really, I loathe you. I despise you with all of my being."
Ben bites his lip, smiling so wide he almost looks possessed.
"Get out of my bed, Benjamin, I never want to see you again."
"And yet, you are the one who just turned over to face me," Ben points out.
Toby blinks and Ben's smile turns smug.
"I know that now you're about to tell me some Freud-based bullshit about why that means I secretly want to have your anal-love-babies because mum didn't show me enough attention or whatever, but that's so not true."
"Mhmm, that makes sense."
"I know." Toby smiles, satisfied. "Wait, hang on… it does?"
"There's no way your parents didn't show you enough attention, my darling Toby Jug." He grins, teeth glinting in the darkness as they catch the moonlight.
"If a mass-murderer jumps through that window and bludgeons you to death, Ben, I want you to know I shan't be stopping him."
"That's part of my big plan to get you to kiss me." Ben props himself up on a elbow, cheek resting against his fist as he looks down at Toby.
Toby stares back, utterly blank. Ben sighs.
"CPR, you great idiot."
