make a text box flow between columns? Indesign CS3

Howdy -- I'm laying out some text that has some call out boxes in it that should have a different background. The only way I can figure how to do this is make a seperate box, put the text in it, then cut the box and paste it in as a character. This must not be the way to do it though, because once the box is moved down to the bottom of a column, it just runs down out of the frame rather than splitting and flowing with the rest of the text.

Ideas? In indesign CS3
