Hermione never expected having a child to be such a task. Everyone and every book had something different to say about it. After only three weeks she was sure she was going to be a complete failure.

She knew that all people have the same basic needs, yet infants seemed to need them ten fold. How could she get what she needed when her daughter was taking everything from her.

Severus was wonderful. He knew when Hermione needed time to herself and would take the baby, but he had lessons to teach, leaving her and the child alone all day.

~~~~~~~
Most days, the time until Severus returned back to their rooms seemed to go rather quickly, but not today.
“Hold and rock child,” she read aloud, trying to calm herself as well as the baby. Madame Pomfrey had assured her earlier in the day that the baby did not have colic, but Hermione was certain that she did. That was the only reason she would be crying so hard.
“Let me take her,” a voice behind her said.
Turning, she saw her husband and gratefully handed the screaming child to him.
“Run yourself a bath,” he said. “I’ll watch her.”
~~~~~~~

Hermione had barely settled into the steaming, bubbly water when the crying stopped. Curiosity and fear sweeping over her, she clambered from the tub to see what had caused this.

What she saw caused her to smile.

Severus stood there, their daughter asleep in his arms, Hermione knowing that the simple smell of him had lulled her.

Coping patterns and the ability to adopt to stress are developed over the course of a lifetime and remain consistent later in life. The small child had already found one way of being calmed. Hermione could not wait to see her discover others.
