Thirty seconds remain.
She holds her breath and silently crosses them each off an invisible list.
At twenty five his muscles begin to twitch.
At twenty a breath rattles in his throat.
At fifteen he takes his first voluntary breath - no need to breathe for him now.
As she crosses ten off the list his breathing becomes less laboured.
At five he opens his eyes; obsidian eyes fix on her.
As she crosses the last second off the wound at his neck finally closes completely.
Her Master’s thesis is proved; her lover is saved.
“Hermione,” he whispers.
“Severus, welcome back.”
