The girl should have been in Slytherin, with a talent like that for finding the right chords to strike with her words. Or perhaps he'd been more of an influence on her over the past years than he originally suspected.

“Are you staying of your own accord, or was she expecting some form of reply?” he snapped at the owl that watched him with gleaming eyes. Bryna ruffled her feathers indignantly in answer and remained perched on the edge of the table.

“So it's to be that way, then,” Severus mused, glancing back down at the letter in his hands.

“You're playing a dangerous game, Hermione. It seems you've forgotten that fire burns.” His words were met with a sharp intake of breath from the woman in front of him as her eyes met his in the mirror. Turning to face him, she pressed her back against the bathroom counter with a mixture of relief and uncertainty in her eyes.

“Severus... you're home.”

“Isn't that what you wanted?” Severus advanced slowly into the bathroom towards the witch, a malicious smile pulling up the edges of his mouth as he spoke. “For me to come back home because you 'love' me?”

-*-*-*-*-*-

“I do love you, Severus,” she answered in a trembling voice, the counter digging painfully into her back as she found herself with no more room to retreat.

“So you've said.” Severus pressed himself against his wife's body, pinning her in place as his hands grasped both of her wrists tightly. “And you expected me to believe that I overreacted and come crawling back to beg you for forgiveness.” His fingers bit into Hermione's flesh until she winced in pain, feeling bruises already beginning to form beneath his painful grip.

“Perhaps you should have married Weasley after all,” he growled.

-*-*-*-*-*-

“Severus, please-”

“Am I hurting you, Hermione?” Tilting his face down towards her, Severus brushed his lips against her ear in what could almost have been a tantalizing caress if things had been different. He could feel a tear brush against his jaw as it trailed downwards along her cheek, and all he could do was chuckle darkly in her ear. “Is your heart shattering within your chest at my cruelty, love?”

Hermione only whimpered in answer and tried to pull away, but Severus held her fast, pinned firmly between himself and the bathroom counter. “Because I hope it is.”

-*-*-*-*-*-

“I want you to look at yourself,” Severus had growled in her ear, spinning her to face the mirror as he had torn the clothing from her body.

“My lovely little harlot,” he had called her.

This time when he left, he didn't bother slamming the door, knowing the almost uncaring silence would break her worse than any display of anger ever could. And as Hermione curled in on herself against the icy flooring of the bathroom, his words as he took her that last time echoed in her ears.

“Cry for me, my little whore...”

And cry she did.
