Dittany of Crete

GOF (697) when Dumbledore was talking to Harry and Sirius after Harry's back from Voldemort's rebirthing.

Sirius: "The wands connected? Why?"
DD: "Priori Incantantem" his eyes gazed into Harry's and it was almost as though an invisible beam of understanding shot between them."
Siruis: "The reverse spell effect?"
DD: "Exactly, Harry's wand and Voldemort's wand share the same cores. Each of them contains a feather from the tail of the same phoenix.'This' phoenix, in fact, he added and he pointed to the scarlet-and -gold bird, pearching peacefully on Harry's knee."

Siruis: "So what happens when a wand meets it's brother?"
DD: "They will not work properly against each other. If, however the owners of the wands force the wands to do battle... a very rare effect will take place."
DD goes on to tell what the Priori Incantantem effect does, which is nothing that will bring down anybody.

The first time that I read this, it was my opinion, that Harry will not be able to use his wand against Voldemort successfully. So, How can a boy bring down such a powerful wizard, such as Voldemort, with something other than a wand? a potion? Yeah I can see that now... Harry slips Voldemort a mickey and makes him drink a Love potion and Voldemort falls for somebody.. uh? Who... Trelawney! Romilda Vane! Yeah Right. Or Harry goes muggle style and brings a muggle weapon? na ... I was stumped and I knew that it would all come down to these two and not someone else doing it for him. Hmm?

GOF(?) Dumbledore talks about his brother to Harry
Aberforth was arrested once for practicing inappropriate charms on a goat.

HBP (523) After Harry cursed Draco in the bathroom.
He (Snape) half lifted Malfoy into a standing position. "You need the hospital wing. There may be a certain amount of scarring, but if you take dittany immediately we may avoid even that... Come..."
----------------

Sneaky little Rowling snuck in a clue right under our noses; right when she knew we would be more likely to look another direction to follow the story. Snape gives us this clue and it's "dittany." I have heard of dittany before, but did not know what it was exactly, so I looked it up online. So many red flags went up that I could not believe it.

Dittany of Crete

Why would Snape just say this right now, right when Draco's mind was on his pain, not potions ingredients? I'm sure Draco would not say "Oh good dittany, just the thing." Rowling put this in for Harry's benefit. Here is my research....

Medicinal Uses of dittany of Crete:
As a medicinal plant, the herb had been utilized to heal wounds, soothe pain, and ease childbirth. The root has been used in a salve to treat sciatica, and the juice was consumed in wine to cure snake bite.
(Ok except for the sciatica and the childbirth, I could see where Rowling might make good use for this plant. Even if Harry was to only copy Snape's idea in using this for healing wounds. Will someone be bitten by a snake?... Nagini?.. Or wounded and Harry use this? Ok back to my research.)

It can be made into a warm drink where it's aromatic healing properties can be used as an anticonvulsive.
(remember that Draco was shaking.) This goes on to list a couple of other reasons this has been used as a medicine. But I'll stop here.

Now let's hear it's history... (also edited for removal of non relavant comments)
"Mentioned in Charlemagne's list of herbs, dittany was popular in medieval times as an medicinal herb. Hippocrates recommended it for stomach and digestive system diseases, rheumatism, arthritis and used it to regulate menses, to tone and heal. (ok not so edited there.) The species name 'dictamus' is derived from the mountain Dicte on the Isle of Crete, one of the mountains on the island where dittany of crete grows."
(so it grows in the mountains. I get a hint that if Rowling uses this plant more, that we will be finding the story leading us to the mountains.)

"In ancient times dittany of Crete was famous for it's alleged property of expelling weapons imbedded in soldiers."
(Ah think of the war to come. Will muggles join in? Something more to think about, the many references to goblin items example goblin helmets and goblin made armor. Not all magical creatures use wands even if they do use magical items for defense.)

"Wild goats were reputed to seek out the plant after being struck by arrows; and the arrows would fall out immediately. Shepards saw this and would then would ingest it and then later make compresses of leaves to heal open wounds."
(Ok so we know this is how it's going to be used to heal Draco's wounds. Also note that Aberforth Dumbledore likes to experiment with goats. Maybe he will play a larger role in this last book and teach Harry about dittany. Harry already knows that goats are where you can find Bezoars. This might be a reason for Harry to look him up, at his goat smelling bar in Hogsmeade.)

"In ancient times it was believed that a snake would allow itself to be burned to death rather than cross a path of dittany of Crete."
(Woh major red flags went off here. Is this how Harry will finally be able to defeat Voldemort in the end? We know he will have to find a way to kill him without a wand. Will this be how? Voldemort is not fully human anymore since he has been splitting his soul the way he did. We see so many snake like traits in Voldemort. I see Voldemort threatening someone or someplace that Harry LOVES dearly..Ron, Hermione or other friends or even Hogwarts itself. Also note below the word "Eronda" <--sounds like Ron. Then Rowling has mentioned that she cannot understand why no one (us the fans) seems to be worried about Hermione's safety. I believe that Ron and Hermione will be in danger and Harry will have to save them as usual. Anyway the trio needs to stay together to be able to concur in the end. You know Harry's LOVE is his driving force that will give him the strength he needs to overcome scary situations. Will Harry use dittany to trap Voldemort? I predict that Hermione will create a fire to expel the Inferi, and in so doing, this fire that will possibly consume Voldemort?)

(Here note the name albus)

Dittany Root Bark
Dictamnus albus var. dasycarpus

This Fire plant is also known as the Burning Bush, because the flowers produce a gas that when lit on still summer evenings makes blue flames that don't damage the plant. This is one of the many herbs in absinthe. It is also incorporated into celebrations of Samhain and logically enough is associated with Persphone (Elemental Earth). Because this magick herb is also sacred to Diana (Moon), it is said that deer who eat this plant become safe from the arrow. This is not the same thing as dittany of Crete, which is a member of the oregano family.

(PS- and here get this reference to it's other name...)

DITTANY, THE MAGIC HERB OF CRETE
Dittany (diktamo) grows only in Crete. The locals called it also “eronda”, which means love, for its aphrodisiac properties. Popular in Minoan Crete and Ancient Greece, it is considered a highly therapeutic plant. Hippocrates recommended it for stomach and digestive system diseases, rheumatism, arthritis and used it to regulate menses, to tone and heal. It was named after the mountain Dikti (Lassithiotika) where it teems.

Isn't it love that Harry is supposed to use to kill Voldemort?

Is this a Quibbler worthy article or what? LOL!!! Insanity is too much fun.
