Several questions have been asked about Voldemort at the beginning of GOF. He wasn't really human yet, but still he had a type of physical form. It was a much different form than the way we last saw him at the end of SS.
(502 HBP quotes SS) Voldemort
"I was ripped from my body, I was less than a spirit, less than the meanest ghost... but still, I was alive."
This leads me to believe that he needed to make himself a bit more stronger, more humanlike. He had to gain some sort of physical form to put into the caludron for a rebirthing. We saw evidence that Voldemort was desperate enough to gain strength, for the time being, before he could have Wormtail help him gain a humanlike body, like he had before. Remember Quirrell and the unicorn blood? But still, how did he get to the point where we saw him in at the beginning of GOF? I believe he had gathered at least one of his Horcruxes to get this form. So, if I'm right so far, my next question is what was that Horcrux? It had to have been one so severely hacked at already or we might have seen a much more stronger piece of Voldemort at the beginning of GOF.
Now put that thought aside for a minute, and lets take a look at some clues from POA. Wormtail. As well as a DE, he was the Potter's Secret Keeper. Since he did not die, he remains their Secret Keeper. Only he can tell where their house is located. Now remember that their house was supposed to be destroyed, turned to rubble.
Now here is where I take a couple of other people's theories and add my own thoughts to twist it to fit my own theory. One person said that it's possible for Harry to have been an accidental Horcrux. I don't agree at all, but there IS something there to think about. OK now, there is another friend's research that shows something else. Someone said that Voldemort was probably planning to use Harry's death to create another Horcrux. I was 'ify' about that theory, but the more I thought about it, it makes perfect sence. But what was the Horcrux? A sword? A goblet? A necklace? A ring? All of these objects would most definately have been noticeable in the rubble of a house that was destroyed. I agree, that anything of this type, would have been taken back to the school for safe keeping. But I don't believe, that anything of this type was made into a Horcrux, at this time. No matter if Voldemort was planning to make any trinket into one at that time or not. But what other things was there, that we have questions about, that could have been turned into a Horcrux by mistake?
Lets think about "Soul spitting." Hmm. What happens when a Horcrux spell is not performed and you kill again and again? Does the soul split only for a moment then reunite again afterwards? Yes, I believe this makes sence.
Now we have not been told much about "how" the Horcrux spell works. But we do know, in order to split the your own soul and place it into an object, that a murder is needed to do the splitting. My theory is simple. The caster has to perform two spells. One to kill (Avada Kadavara), and two is the Horcrux spell that Slughorn does not know. This second one takes, or siphons, the torn soul piece and places it into the object intended as a Horcrux. But the key here is the timing of the two spells. No hesitation or disaster can occur to the spell caster. A very dangerous spell indeed.
NOW, lets take a look at Voldemort and Harry's situation. We know that Harry did not die, the spell backfired. Voldemort had just killed Lily minutes, perhaps seconds, before his attempt on Harry. It is possible to think that her death was enough to spilt Voldemort's soul, just for a moment, but his soul did not have the chance to reunite with itself before Voldemort turned to Harry. Voldemort did not perform the second (Horcrux) spell soon enough after Lily's death, he tried to kill Harry first before performing the Horcrux spell. This means the split already occured with Lily's death. Voldemort was not thinking about that one.
But I believe the piece of Voldemort's soul that was left (after Voldemort killed Lily) was trapped somewhere. Could it have been trapped inside his own wand? From what we see, when the spell to kill Harry backfired, it rebounded back to it's origin, Voldemort's wand. (It killed Voldemort's body but not the soul thus this is the free one we see in SS.) It wasn't until he tried to kill Harry that he intended to make a Horcrux. He tried the spell this time (not with Lily and James.) I still say timing is the key, then when Voldemort cast the second part of the spell (for Harry,) it was too late. So the broken piece of his soul (from Lily's death) was gathered into his wand ready to go into the Horcrux but was not able to because Lily's LOVE stopped the evil he was doing. The rebound from Harry's attack stopped the second spell from being able to finish. An ancient spell to counteract an ancient spell.
If I'm right so far then this explains why, at the beginning of GOF, Voldemort had a piece of his body back, not human enough but something more than before. I believe that after Wormtail ran off to find Voldemort at the end of POA, Voldemort said, "Let's go get my wand," so they did. He'd need it to do any magic and it's natural to want your own wand for sentimental reasons. It could have been a pleasant surprise to Voldemort to find out part of his soul was still inside. Now remember wands are made out of wood and so are most houses. It would be something that would be hard to find in a house turned to rubble. At this time people are not sure if Voldemort is really dead or has run off somewhere injured badly. No one is looking for a wand. Then I think only those who had previous knowledge of the Potter's secret location could go there and sift through the rubble. Not everyone could go there or I'd expect there would be a monument errected there that says "This is where the Dark Lord died! Whooo Hooo!" So few had access. This also explains how Voldemort got his wand back. He knew where he dropped it. And it was just lucky it was still there.

EDITED to remove a goofy thought here in the end notes. LOL!
