Sorry I can't come with him, but Book Club beckons. Your idea of covering your couch is exactly like my practice of throwing rugs and chair mats all over the carpet everywhere. You can throw the covering in the wash, but you can't throw a couch or carpet in the wash. Believe me, I would if I could!
