As a new member to the LiveJournal community, I have taken the liberty of perusing through the various pages and journals offered to me by the extravagant populace of this community. What I have found especially intriguing is not the content of these aforementioned pages (A topic to be cataloged away for a rainy day, perhaps), but the vividness and all too illegible brightness of far too many journals!
I am not in anyway attempting to deface or slander the members of this community, but surely if you are here to run a page for people to read, you would attempt to create your journal in a manner that is, at the very least, legible?
In my opinion, the main priority of any journal is not to show off your design, but its content. It is, of course, nice to have a pleasing design to flaunt as well, but as previously mentioned, there is such a thing as going overboard!: Black text on a shockingly pink background, a light gray font on a far too achromatic background, and journals with backgrounds that contain a varietal assortment of colors contrasted (And I use that term with all of the seriousness that I am able to muster) against a size 5px font with an indistinct pigmentation!
In short, overdoing a layout may defeat the entire purpose of having a design, which is to compliment your content, not obscure it.
