Putting the time in

This week in writing has been a slow slog through a somewhat flabby story. I sucked the fat out of the first draft, and I’m pretty much clueless as to how effective the story will be. I’m too close to it right now to have any insight. The plot is solid, I’m sure, but I’m hoping that when I come back to the third draft, I’ll have enough distance from the material to judge it properly. Then I’m going to line it up for the Critters queue.

Speaking of Critters, I have a story due up next week. I’m going to get involved in the Baen’s slush forum too, whilst I have a backlog of stories that need critiques. Then I may try and reach out and start nurturing my own corpse of first readers. I’d like to start getting involved in critiquing and giving critiques with other more serious writers. Whilst I really value the efforts of the other critters, there is a high percentage of useless advice that comes my way, mixed in with the good. I’ve already been fortunate enough to link up with one professional writer through Critters, but if anybody out there reading this wants to get involved in a critiquing circle, or has one already going, then drop me a line.

Take it easy.
