Is there anyone in your life who you feel is exceptionally wise?
I've many people in my life who I consider to be rather wise, such as Iris, or our Mum and Dad. But I would have to say that the two wisest people I currently have in my life are my two daughters, Sophie and Olivia.
Now, I suppose one would ask, "Graham, why would you consider such children to be the wisest out of everyone you know in your life?" And it is a fully warranted and expected question. I reckon most would not consider children to be wise, but rather to be naive and innocent. And Sophie and Olivia certainly are both of those things, but it is because of those two qualities that I find them to be so wise! If that makes any sort of sense at all.
To see the eyes through the world of children, and not just children but two little girls, is the most humbling and eye-opening experience I could have ever asked for. They love unconditionally, but still with a degree of caution that their Daddy would do well to remember. They are not afraid of being hurt or getting bruised (emotionally, rather). Each person contains the potential for a new friend, regardless of where they may be from or what their status may be in life. They see the world in such simplistic terms that I often forget what it's like to not have things be complicated. I've only known complicated in my life, but the girls are a good reminder of how to get back to the very basics.
When I find my nerves getting a bit rattled, they're always there to calm me back down. They find joy in even the smallest of trifles, something that I think adults tend to forget as life wears on. We eventually only look for the biggest and the most grand, and it is only those things that can fully astonish us. The little miracles in every day life seem insignificant and are often ignored. Not for children. Something such as the mere sight of a butterfly can fill their days with endless wonder, and they will often talk about it for many days to come afterwards. If I see a butterfly, I barely even notice it and continue on my way, unable to stop for just a mere second to acknowledge and be grateful for it.
I think we've many things to learn from children. Many lessons that are so basic to human nature that we've since forgotten as the world turned us cynical. Jaded us. Perhaps, beneath the surface of all of our adult skin and adult memories, there's still a child in there, somewhere, searching for the next butterfly.
