Dark Crystal goodness!

What did I do to deserve such a wonderful best friend?

About a week and a half ago, a parcel arrived from my best friend Amy in New Zealand, containing photos of her family and I (the last time I was there), some pictures that her youngest daughter drew for me and, finally, some little precious pieces of my childhood, in the form of two DVDs and a book.

The DVDs in question are Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.
I'm a huge fan of both, though The Dark Crystal is my favourite of the two (I'm pretty certain Amy and I differ on this one point, due to its distinct lack of David Bowie in dangerously tight pants ;D).

In addition to the DVDs, she bought and sent me the book The World of the Dark Crystal, which was published at the same time as the film was released. It provides extensive background details of the world of the film and, aside from the introduction (written by fantasy illustrator and the film's chief designer, Brian Froud), is written to seem as though it's a genuine archealogical/anthropological account of the discovery of the world and civilization from the film.

It's an absolutely gorgeous piece of work, though unfortunately these photos don't do it justice. Do have a look anyway, though:

There are a number of photos of supposed archealogical finds, in the form of carved walls (such as this one), tools, instruments etc.

There are several pieces throughout the book that consist of a page of opaque paper, with geometrical/astronomical designs, laid over another page with a full colour designs of 'actual' things or beings, showing the correspondence between the world and the heavens. Very cool!

The books contains lots of Froud's preliminary skecthes, allowing you to see his creation process - so neat!

And shots from the actual sets used in the film. In a movie packed with cool places, I always did think that Aughra's observatory was one of the best!

In the back of the book there is a pocket, in which is tucked a copy of the original booklet Froud and Henson put together, in order to pitch their idea to the film studios.

Eeeeeeeeee, many hours of enjoyment shall ensue! (yes, it has actually taken me almost two weeks to have enough time to sit down and read it)
I shall alternate reading this with reading my Catalan copy of Alice in wonderland. :)

Have a good day or night, all.
