Verandus Loran

Jun 05, 2009 17:53

Verandus Loran was born in Nexus, where he learned to fight on the streets - both with his hands and with a bow. He earned the notice of the Guild, who took him in. They made him a bodyguard, mercenary, assassin, and later a merchant. His skill in dealing death and dealing silver were equal, and his ability to negotiate became famous. After a time, and much experience in the Scavenger Lands, he was sent after a target that had often escaped their grasp: Linowan.

He was instructed to bring the Guild's wares to Linowan (and Linowan wares back), while not tipping the Haltans off as to what they did. He posed as a friendly soul to a Linowan boat clan; he lived among them and learned their ways, expressing feigned humility to overcome their distrust. In time, his skills at war were what carried him through - he ventured into Halta with them on a raid, helping cut a tree down and sending secret messages to Guild representatives into Halta at the same time.

However, Loran's exposure to the people of Linowan took its toll on him. He earned the trust of Seraho, a shaman of the boat clan he lived amongst. The man fashioned his Linowan Mask for him - a sign of ultimate respect. Loran was given his instructions, however: to try to cement a relationship between the Guild and Linowan, he would work with Guild members in Halta to engineer a massacre for the Linowan forces. Loran accepted the task and went through with it, convincing a war band leader to send hundreds of warriors into a trap laid by the Haltans. Loran went with them, fought at their side, and let himself be captured. He was separated from the other captives in Halta - the two dozen men who somehow survived.

He inquired as to their fate, and discovered that they were to be given to the Fair Folk. These were men he had helped, fought aside, and came to respect. Loran saw that he was about to take a step towards immorality that he could not accept in himself. He created a plan - he used his status in the Guild to acquire the guard rotations, and then slipped among the Linowans later in the night, wearing his mask. He explained that he would free them - not only from Halta, but from the machinations of those who did not care for their lives. It was then that the Unconquered Sun chose him, revealing himself to the man in a flash of insight. Loran led them himself, wearing his mask, and broke free to vanish into the woods and escape death by the Fair Folk.

He spent the following time at the edge of the borderlands. He indoctrinated those who followed him in the Unconquered Sun; he inspired them to religious fervor and explained to them that the East had become a tool of the rest of Creation. With the Unconquered Sun supporting them, they could grow into something more. He, slowly, brought some twenty men into the belief that Halta and Linowan were enemies because of the fall of the Solars before - and those who came later. He snuck back into Halta, finding sympathetic people there, and slowly created the small village of Senescha where he found a manse of one of his old incarnations. Here, Haltans and Linowans that he converted - a small handful, many already prone to questioning when they should not - began to live and work together. He brought in Dragon King allies that he found in the forests, as custodians and protectors of the village.

Now, Loran has set out. He needs resources, to make Senescha into more than one village. He also has retribution to visit upon the Guild, for their many crimes, and he needs allies.
