Of course, there's no way to really know what your life would be like if your father were still alive, but there's always the possibility he would have surprised you.

I know I never imagined my father being the supportive and accepting person he is. I figured he might grudgingly accept me, and perhaps deep down, that's the way he really feels. But I've been happy and surprised to know that in terms of his interactions with me, and with my partner when I had one, he's been nothing but loving and supportive and totally welcoming.

I know it is not what you would expect, but perhaps it would have ended up being that way with your father, too.
