THE MOVIE WEEKEND:
This weekend was all about the movies. I managed to fit in two, which almost became three. On Friday, I went to see the top-grossing movie of the weekend - "
Phone Booth" with Becky & Michelle. It was by no means at the top of my list, but it wasn't a complete train wreck. I wouldn't tell anyone to run out and see this movie. It is a pretty short film that is funny at times, and if it weren't for Keifer Sutherland, the whole thing would have been pretty bland. Marketing had a lot to do with this movie's box office success. Though suspenseful, I did feel my movie dollar could have been better spent (even though I used a gift certificate). Those looking for the short&sweet semi-thriller will enjoy "
Phone Booth" for about an hour and 10 min, but will find themselves a little unfulfilled at movies end.
Saturday evening's cinematic outing was much more rewarding. Andrew, Marissa, and I went to see "Spirited Away". Some of you are probably saying, "What the hell is that?". Don't worry, you are not alone, there was only 1 other person in the theater with us on Saturday night, and it was opening weekend... Regardless of the attendance, "Spirited Away" was a fantastic film. I have known about the film for some time, and have been eagerly awaiting its release in the United States. It is a Japanese anime that has been translated into English by Disney for domestic release. The animation was top notch, and the story was strange and twisted, yet captivating. With a PG rating, it is technically a children's movie, but must be appreciated for the story itself. Though it may seem a bit bizarre to those not accustomed to anime, "Spirited Away" is a remarkable tale of a young girl's journey to escape a magical world in which her parents have been turned into pigs for slaughter (I did say it was strange). Though a bit slow at parts, “Spirited Away” is a true work of art that includes well-positioned moments of suspense, excitement, tenderness, and silliness. "Spirited Away" plays with your emotions and mood in a way that no other film can. You will leave the theater with a smile.
I was supposed to go see "The Pianist" on Sunday night, but my grandparents came over for dinner, so I thought it best to take a rain-check. I will probably try to see it sometime this week... maybe Wednesday night.
THE HOUSE OF ATKINS
My house has been an interesting place the last week or so... I had decided to go back on the Atkins diet after spring break, just to do some spring cleaning for the summer i suppose...
*** For those of you that don't know I lost 40lbs. on the Atkins diet during the fall. I went from 220lbs (an all time high) to just under 180lbs. I should also mention that I worked out like a nut during that time, and still adhere to a strict workout regiment.***
... I haven't put back any of the weight I lost in the fall, but I thought I might try burning a little more off before the summer. Anyway, when I told my family that I was going on the Atkins diet again, my mother declared that the whole family would be going on it (this from the woman who went on it for 36hrs in the fall). My dad was not too thrilled with the idea, but with three of us on it, he's going to have to cook for himself unless he just eats our low carb meals. Truth be known, I really don't like everyone being on Atkins with me. Because I had such success with it before, the rest of my family seems to regard me at the authority on the subject. Until I printed them out a list of foods and their carb contents i was getting bombarded with --- "Can I eat this?, Can I eat that?". I still get these questions even AFTER I gave them the list.
Now, I'm not going to explain to you how Atkins works, other than to say it is a controlled carb diet. However, during the first 1-2 weeks of the diet (referred to as 'induction') people can become physically ill and extremely irritable. These negative effects came to a head on Thursday evening in the Corkery household. Having experienced this before, I was probably the most SANE. My mom came into the house screaming and was blaming me for her hunger, and my sister looked like death. My dad called me a nit-picky SOB when I told him that you technically were not supposed to drink coffee while on Atkins --- this is after he ASKED me. So yea, if anyone is studying bizarre eating habits, come visit the Corkery home. I just do my own thing to avoid conflict. Cheese is my GOD!!!
AND CLASSES CONTINUE
I am in what many regard as the first REAL week of classes. I am very nervous about a Mathematics test I have next Tuesday, the course content is mind numbing, so I will probably be studying for that a while later in the week, and other the weekend. I also went to my 1st CEO meeting. I will be attending these throughout the term to gain leadership experience to put to good use in the Drexel Ski Club. I will also be awarded a leadership certificate at the end of the term, which always looks good on a resume. The commute is getting easier, now that I have an ample supply of Golden Dollars for the trains. I have a few assignments due, but the workload in college is still maybe a tenth of what I received in High School (so far). Things will probably get more difficult as the years go by, but w/ 19 credits. I still don't feel overwhelmed.
Ok, that’s about it for now... catch you all later!
