Farm journal 2009 10-25, Melons and Apples

High: 86.5 Low 54.1 Rain 0  The weather station's indoor base needed new batteries, which we installed by 8:00 a.m. yesterday.  The data between 3:00 pm 10/24 and  8:00 am on 10/25 is erroneous.  The actual low temperature should have been cooler than the 8:00 am reading.

First: With David, gave 1 sprinkling can water each to the 8 rows of strawberries.

Morning:  Weeded and fertilized the rest of the melon garden.  Very discouraging!!! Hardly anything left.  The leaves are browning or have already crumbled off, and much of the fruit is rotten.  I don't know whether the problem is insects, disease, or lack of water.  I have been spraying weekly, yet I see all these bugs there.  I  pruned most of the vines off, leaving only the vines that were still green on the end and had fruit that was not yet rotten.  Hope the plants will regenerate.  I brought in 3 small melons that no longer had living vines attached.

Afternoon:  Reseeded some ungerminated cells in lanai trays: tomato, tropical canna, artichoke.  Added crystals and transplanted dichondra groundcover to the apple tree bases. Still have half a tray for replacements.

Evening:  Watered the strawberries with David, watered the lanai and lawn trays.

Night: at David's request, gave him a list of minutes and times per day for automatic watering for row crops and ground covers.  He's going to reprogram all the controller.  We have 7 controllers running approximately 19 zones, in addition to the 12 zone lawn system.
