I haven't said anything on here for a long time.
I haven't had much to say for a long time.
I was happy with how things have been, but was consumed knowing that they were going to change. For those of you who have read "The Dark Tower" it could be explained best by saying that my ka-tet was breaking. But even beyond that, I simply haven't had much to look forward to. I've been unemployed for awhile now, and I didn't see myself being happy career wise in any of the jobs I was applying for. I was applying for them because I knew how to do them. But I never actually landed any of the jobs. After that, I finally started to apply for retail jobs, and had didn't hear back from any of them either. It seemed no one wanted to hire me. My money was running out, and everything seemed pretty bleak. Then, one of my roommates, one of my very best friends (and owner of the house I'm staying at), one of the people who helped me define what a good friend is... moved to New York. I knew it was coming, but it still hit me really hard.
Around this time, I also heard from a friend that works at EA Mythic. (He was one of Chris's college roommates) He was curious what was up, so I let him know, and he was wanted to know if I had given up on trying to do anything game industry related. Having had no luck with stuff that I was directly qualified for, I more or less had. He thought I would have a fair chance at getting a job at Mythic, and encouraged me to apply. Weeks rolled by as I tried to get things prepared. I had suddenly been given some hope. With that hope came a problem. I was latching on to this opportunity, and if it fell through, I was going to hit rock bottom. I was hesitant to apply for other career jobs now, because I didn't want to have some sort of obligation to a place other than Mythic. I was in it, all or nothing.
Days and weeks churned by and finally the interviews started. The first phone interview went pretty well. A week or so later I was contacted about being flown down for a face to face. Gersh had recommended me for a job, and that definitely made a difference. My interview was on a Monday, but I flew up Friday so I could check out the area. In that time, I got to see the office and meet a lot of it's people. It was a fantastic place. All the cubes and offices were decorated with posters and action figures. Hellboy, Gundams, Invader Zim, Lord of the Rings, Nerf Guns, Street Fighter, board games, card games, table top games... everything. Here was a whole office full of people who like to be entertained. I felt right at home, and got along well with everyone. By the time my actual interview rolled around, I was more eager to work there than ever. After about 5 hours of casual interviews, it was time for me to fly home. I thought things went pretty well, but I was terrified that EA might refuse me because of lack of work experience, regardless of what interviewers might have voted.
However, as of 11:29am of Thursday, July 26 of 2007, I am once again employed. By August 20th I'll be in Fairfax, Virginia as an Assistant Designer at EA Mythic, working on Warhammer Online:Age of Reckoning.
As in so many other times of my life, things have finally worked out. And for the first time in years, I actually have a something longterm to look forward to, something to strive for. I somehow managed to not only get a foot in the door, but my head in as well. It's going to be a great experience working there, and for the times it's not... it's a job, thats why they pay me.
