My dad, Bill, is the one who got me started drinking scotch when I was either 17 or 18. And writing about him now, I am wondering about using the right tense. He died in 1994. So can I say "he is the one who got me started drinking scotch" or should I say "he was the one who got me started drinking scotch." I guess the past-tense wins this
