“My feet hurt.”

“You’ve already said that.”

“My legs do too.”

“You said that as well.”

“It’s getting dark. “ Ollie paused in his arduous trek to squint at the deepening sunset. It would be night within the next half hour and dark shadows stretched eerily across the rough landscape. “I’m gonna kill Roy and Connor when I get hold of them.”

Bruce stopped walking. “So you’ve told me at least thirty times in the last hour.” he opened his canteen and tipped it to parched lips, licking the last drop of water from the top.   “I’ll be having a word with Dick and Tim as well.” he grumbled.

Ollie stared into his open canteen, as it would miraculously refill if he concentrated hard enough. “I hope so. My boy‘s would have never left us if your two hadn’t influenced them.”

“My boy’s…” Bruce blustered. “My boy’s influence your boy’s?” He choked and winced, his throat too dry to yell. “Harper’s never needed anyone to influence him when there‘s trouble to be found.” he growled.

“Hey!” Ollie spluttered.  “That’s my kid you’re talking about Wayne, if you want me to show you what sort of ‘trouble’ can be found, just you keep say'n things like that!"

“If you think for one darn minute….” Bruce’s retort choked off mid sentence. His nose twitched and he turned slowly, surveying the horizon.  “You smell that?”

The two heroes looked at each other. “Yeah” Ollie sniffed. “Smells like…”

“Burgers.” Bruce finished.

“Yeah and…”

“Wood smoke.” Bruce finished again.

“The heat must have fried our brains, we’re hallucinating. Where would there be burgers out here.” Ollie muttered, turning in a slow circle.

The distant sound of laughter reached them at the exact same moment they spotted a wispy column of smoke snaking up into the darkening sky just over a rise a short distance away.

Moving as one, the men hurried over the rough ground and ran to the top of the small hill. As the last rays of daylight abandoned them to the cool darkness of night, both men looked out to see the glowing orange flicker of a campfire within easy walking distance.
