For the always fabulous hitlikehammers , who asked our interpretation of the prompt "Greatest Hits" at the lostsquee Luau. Once I thought of this, I could not go back. I hope you enjoy darling!

Title: One, Two, Three, FOUR!
Characters: James, Miles, Juliet, Jin
Word count: 629 words, rated G
Summary: James has a surprise for his friends
Note: Set in the 70's, no ship mentioned.

"What's going on?"

Miles asks, always suspicious. He had been the hardest to keep in the dark, too. James smirks, knowing it infuriates him.

"Meet me at the school at nine and you'll know," James says.

"Fine, be even more cryptic!" Miles says, throwing his hands in the air.

He stomps away and James grins, before calling Jin on the radio.

Juliet's observing him, cool as always. She knows he's got something up his sleeve, but she trusts it's good, obviously.

"Okay James," she says. "We're all here so what did you want to show us?"

Being chief of security means James has all the keys, though he did clear this with Horace, first.

"I've got a surprise," James says, before leading them in the classroom where the kids usually have their music classes. He's not quite sure it's assembled right, but the new drum set draws their eyes, then the setup all around with an electric guitar, a keyboard and James' own acoustic guitar near the mike.

"We could try to jam," he offers, while the other three respectively curse, laugh and smile.

The idea came when Dan had played the piano one night, before he left, soon joined by Juliet for a couple of four hands pieces. It was great to see Juliet smile and the topic of playing instruments had come up. James did strum the guitar a little, though it had been a while, and the fact that Miles had once been the drummer of a punk band had not been that surprising, all things considered. When Jin had said he'd learn to play electric guitar to impress Sun, there had been a moment of melancholic silence before Miles had changed the subject.

But still, it stayed with James. He got himself a guitar and started to practice chords again; had a piano hauled in for Juliet, though they never played together. James convinced Horace of how the school would benefit from new instruments. He had managed to have an electric guitar and a small amp easily, though the keyboard and frigging drums had been more problematic, due their sizes and the limited cargo space on the sub.

But now everything is set and waiting for them.

Miles fusses over the drums to check it out and adjust it as he wants with a constant commentary of how 'he thought James had found a way to go back to the future but no, no, he'd just thought he'd re-enact a scene from the movie "Back to the Future" which is so not the same'. His face splitting grins when he thinks no one is watching totally undermine the rant, though.

Jin does stretching exercises for his fingers while Juliet laughs at the pre-set libraries included in the Roland keyboard-slash-organ. Jim tunes his guitar and waits. Eventually, Miles starts to pound on his drums like there's no tomorrow, and the little fucker is way good, too. When he's satisfied that they have almost bleeding eardrums, he stops, save from hitting the snare in time.

"So? What do you guys wanna play?"

***

Finding a middle ground with their very varied tastes is the hardest: they end up mostly playing the blues. It's pretty ageless so it doesn't clash too hard if they forget themselves and riff off on something that came out in the 80's or later.

James' the one who sings: 1) he's always liked performing, and 2) the others can't carry a tune to save their lives. And, well, singing about other people's sufferings and loneliness comes easy.

Their first concert for the DHARMA folks, a couple of months later, is a raging success. And if Miles' solo starts up mostly like The Stooges and ends up a bit like Rush, they're not going to tell.

The End
