Five things...

On Monday, the Early Show featured a segment called "Five things you didn't know about John McCain." The segment should have been called "Five really boring things you probably already knew about John McCain if you've been paying attention." So in honor of the Early Show and their bland reporting, here's my list: "Five interesting things you really should know about John McCain."

1. John McCain is willing to say whatever it takes to become President, including changing his opinions and contradicting himself on at least eleven important issues. The man doesn't seem to have any principles at all.
2. He not only wants to criminalize abortion, but he has also voted against easy access to birth control 22 times, and wants to continue the idiotic policy of "abstinence education", a strategy for preventing unplanned pregnancies that does not work.
3. Many of McCain's high-ranking military peers are not supporting his campaign despite his service record because of his legendary temper. He has blown up at several senators and even the sister of a POW who was urging Congress to continue investigating the POWs left behind in Vietnam.
4. If his policies aren't enough to convince you that he's a misogynist, he divorced his first wife, Carol, after she was disfigured in a car accident, and married his current wife, beer-heiress Cindy, only one month later. He also called Cindy a cunt in front of reporters when she teased him about his baldness.
5. McCain's legendary stay in the North Vietnamese POW camp "Hanoi Hilton" appears to be mostly lies and exaggerations. According to interviews, declassified documents, and even articles written in his own hand, he was taken to a hospital, publicly praised his captors for their treatment of him, and made radio and tv appearances to assure the international community that he was being treated humanely. Worse, however, after being periodically "slapped" for a few days he eventually capitulated to his captors and gave them information about his mission, including the name of his ship and his target. There is no evidence that he was tortured or held in solitary confinement, as he and his supporters have claimed for years, and his captors have since admitted that he was given special treatment because his father was an Admiral.
