Yesterday, as I was listing all my Tenipuri doujins, I was trying to recall whether I had any Yamada D doujins other than the compilation and the pink and pretty Kimi no uso came to mind. A check with one of my older entries further confirmed I bought it at some point but then, I hadn't seen it in a while. So I began a frantic search for it in my super messy room but to no avail. Then I looked into one of the folders where I store pictures I use for my auctions. It was there... sold.

Felt kinda stupid after that. I mean, it's not like I really wanted it back, but it just felt weird. It was as if I missed having it more so than I missed it.

I used to feel attachment to a lot of things. But as I got older, I tried to not be like that anymore because it appears I'd lead a happier life if I learnt to let things go. 反正旧的不去,新的不来?

And because I was listing my Tenipuri stuff, I had to look through a few ZukaFuji sites and all. It felt quite nostalgic actually, haha.

Next, I'm thinking of selling all the Dir en grey a knot fanletters I've amassed from Japan and maybe some jrock CDs and videos... mostly the first press limited edition stuff. All in very good condition. Would anyone be interested in these? What bands do you like? Maybe I'd have the CD somewhere...

Yesterday, again, we were looking at Robert Capa and James Nachtwey's photos in class.

When I saw the photos that Nachtwey took of refugees in Africa, I nearly wanted to cry, and it was strange because I rarely, if ever, feel this way when it comes to photos.

So the lecturer clicked, slide after slide, and the photos were horrific but strangely artistic. He presents violence in his photos without the show of any blood, weapons and dead bodies, yet the message is crystal and the violence, almost tangible. There is a very perverse sense of beauty and silence in Nachtwey's photos.

I was especially affected by this particular photo which depicted a victim of famine in a war-stricken area in Africa, skinny beyond skinny and on all fours as he moved. He was merely skin and bones and it was a griping sight. In my lecturer's words (or something of the like), the famine had reduced man on all fours, moving around like a beast because he didn't have the energy to stand.

And I thought of babies, born chubby and healthy when they first enter the world... and couldn't help wondering what happened, why, why and why.

How did those babies become mere skin and bones?

To me, Africa is the most ridiculous place ever. Excuse me for making such a sweeping statement, but based on what I understand from the news, wars in that region are almost always about clashes in ethnicity, race and religion, and their wars simply don't make sense. They never do, what with all the senseless killing and the preposterous notion of ethnic cleansing. It's totally ridiculous. Then, the situation is further aggravated by political instability and a lot of corruption.

And as always, it's the most undeserving people -- the civilians -- who have to suffer the attrocities.

When I was studying Geography in lower secondary, Africa was often cited in case studies of desertification and I naively thought poor agricultural planning and droughts (ie, the natural disasters in any case) were the main reason behind their poverty and famines.

At that time, I never knew about the artificial borders and the slew of political problems they have.

It's horrifying to say the least.

I only had one thought as I was looking at the pictures: I wish I could bring them food.

But unfortunately, this isn't a problem that can be solved just by getting people to donate money, food and water.

And so, I sat through class -- everyone was silent except for the lecturer -- feeling sick and incredulous at how the stupidity of the crucial but wrong people can have such devastating effects on a whole country of people, and feeling tears almost welling up in my eyes but I stopped myself because it just seemed so..stupid.

Sigh. It's a pointless rant. What am I doing here, anyway. What right do I have to say anything at all? All my life, all I do is indulge in good food and then worry about getting fat, blow my money on expensive dolls, clothes, CDs and whatnot, and complain endlessly about school and how I don't want to do my homework.

In any case, I think James Nachtwey is a genius.
His photos are really moving, almost like no other.

Sorry to end on such a sombre note.

It's been depressing reading about terrorist attacks, murder trials and paedophiles in the news.

I haven't really been feeling better ever since the last time I wrote about ennui.
I still feel like escaping, if I can, except that I can't.

In other news, we hurriedly went to buy Franz Ferdinand's new album yesterday, as soon as it was out. Yay.

photography, for sale, james nachtwey
