Chapter 8

Brian couldn’t believe how much different school was when he didn’t have to constantly look over his shoulder. Matt, Jimmy, Johnny, and Zacky were always by his side during and in between classes. Johnny and Zacky attached themselves to him more than walked beside him like Matt and Jimmy.

He never really had a friend before and being with Matt and the guys was nice. He felt safe for the first time in such a long time and it scared him. He didn’t want to lose that sense of comfort and was scared that it was going to be ripped away from him.

It was the last class of the day and all he wanted to do was go to sleep. He was worn out from all the changes in his life that Matt brought with him. He liked the change but he was shaken by the great disruption in his life.

“Brian.”

Brian broke out of his reverie to see Zacky’s concerned face getting dangerously closer to his own. Smiling slightly he leaned back.

“I’m fine Zacky. Don’t worry.” Brian reassured him.

“Alright, if you say so.” Zacky disbelievingly said, “Are you coming?”

“No. I got a painting I need to finish for an art contest.”

“Wow.” Zacky squealed, “I’ll tell Matt for you so you can go on ahead and get started. Do you want us to wait for you?”

“No, you don’t have to. Go on and have some fun.”

Brian waited until Zacky left before grabbing the paints he needed and set up an easel. He walked into the storage room and got out his unfinished painting.

Sighing deeply, Brian picked up a small brush and dipped it into the bright gold paint. Brian carefully started to apply the bright paint to the pitch-black background. The bright paint contrasted greatly with the dark background. He applied the gold in little sliver to look like light was piercing through the darkness.

Brian set down the brush he was using and grabbed a smaller paintbrush. He decided to do the man’s eyes last because to him the eyes was the most important part of his painting. The pain and anguish set deeply in the man’s face would be overshadowed slightly by the undying hop and fire the eyes were supposed to show.

He waited to do them because at first the eyes he had drawn always turned out looking lifeless instead of the way he wanted them to. Taking a deep breath, he dipped the brush in a deep chocolate brown pain and began to apply it.

Brian leaned back and looked long and hard at his painting. He had finally got the eyes right, it was finally done. Smiling, Brian put his brush down and got up. Grabbing his paint tray, he walked over to the sink to clean it.

“Wow. It’s beautiful.”

He jumped at the unexpected voice. Turning around he saw Matt and the guys behind him, looking at his finished painting.

Taking a deep calming breath Brian asked, “How long have you guys been here?”

“A while.” Jimmy grinned, “You were so focused on your painting that you didn’t hear us come in. It is really beautiful. Is it for the art contest at the art museum downtown?”

Brian nodded to Jimmy and went back to cleaning and putting his supplies up. He was in the supply closet putting the paints and paintbrushes away when arms encircled his waist, pulling him up against a broad muscular chest. Brian tilted his head back and stared into Matt’s eyes.

“You’re really good you know.” Matt said softly as he tucked Brian’s head under his own, “It is really beautiful.”

Brian blushed at the praise, “It is not that great.” Brian whispered not used to getting praise for his artwork.

Matt sighed and turned Brian around gently. He caressed Brian’s cheek, surprised when he leaned into his touch. Bending down he pressed a gentle kiss to Brian’s forehead. He pulled back slowly, disappointed when he felt Brian tense at the contact. “You should believe in yourself more. The man kind of reminds of you though.”

Brian’s eyes widened at Matt’s remark. No one had ever noticed that before. The painting was about him. He didn’t mean to make the painting about him but he did. “Why does he remind you of me?”

“You don’t show emotion often but when you do it is almost always pain. The eyes remind me of you more than anything. You have a strong sense of hope like the man in your painting. That hope that you have is the reason you agreed to my deal.”

Brian stared at Matt in disbelief. Of all the people to notice why Matt? The sincerity and truthfulness in Matt’s eyes left no room for doubt. Stepping forward he wrapped his arms around Matt, hugging him tightly.

Maybe, just maybe I could let him closer to me, Brian thought.

Chapter 9

Matt was shocked. He stared aimlessly at nothing while Brian was talking to the people in charge of the art contest. What Brian did shocked him greatly. Brian was never one for physical contact, thus why he was surprised when Brian hugged him.

“Hey Matt. Are you alright?”

Matt came out of his reverie to see Johnny’s hand widely moving in front of his face. “Johnny, get your hand out of my face.”

“Sorry, but you were staring out into space or something with this weird creepy grin on your face. You were scaring Zacky, see.” Johnny exclaimed while moving to the side.

After Johnny moved, Matt was able to see Zacky cowering behind Jimmy. Matt stepped forward and opened his mouth to tell Zacky that everything was ok.

“What is going on?”

Matt turned his head to see Brian standing beside Johnny, looking back and forth between Zacky and him.

“BRIAN!” Zacky screamed as he launched himself at Brian.

Brian braced himself just in time before Zacky jumped on him, wrapping his legs around his waist. Brian stumbled backwards a little before regaining his balance.

“Oh Brian, I was so scared. Matt was staring off into space and wouldn’t come out of it for forever. Then he got this really weird, creepy grin on his face and he wouldn’t stop grinning. I thought he was going to kill me.” Zacky cried.

Brian didn’t know what to do so he patted Zacky on the head and sat him down. Brian quickly stood behind Matt as soon as Zacky let go of him.

“Brian.” Whined Zacky, “Why do you always run from me?”

Brian sat his head on top of Matt’s shoulder and mumbled, “Because you always attach yourself to me.”

“Are you done here Brian?” asked Jimmy, smiling at Zacky’s useless pouting.

Brian nodded slowly coming out from behind Matt.

“Do you want to go out with us, Brian?” Johnny asked, while linking his hand with Jimmy’s.

Brian wanted to say no, but couldn’t bring himself to do so. Matt’s pleading eyes didn’t help him either.

I have a feeling that I am going to regret this.
