Lazy Day for Diana

Jul 02, 2007 09:02

Woke up yesterday planning to do several things around the house, like painting fences, cleaning, setting up the new patio fire pit etc. As usual we had a leisurely Sunday breakfast catching up on some of our favorite TV shows; but as we started to clear up the tivo clicked over to live TV and we caught the start of The Concert for Diana running on VH1.

So we all settled back down onto the family room sofa with the intention of watching the first couple of acts before getting on with things.

And there we stayed, for the next seven hours, enjoying the concert, having a fun family time. It's rare that the four of us watch anything together these days. To spend a whole day together is virtually unknown, as the girls have their own active teenage social lives.

Not only did we all enjoy the music, but the "Diana & Me" vignettes between sets sparked interesting conversations about our memories of Diana, feelings about the royal family in general, but also an opportunity to discuss our cultural heritage, and the girls' perspective on it as British kids who have grown up as Americans.

By the end of the day I hadn't done anything I had intended to do, but spending the whole day interacting with your kids is far more important that crossing things off the To-Do List.
