Alright, it's final.
I tried to do a fresh legal install of WinXP on my computer. without going into endless detail about how and why it wouldn't work with me... but I got fed up after two hours of talking to a post.
So I did something rather out of the ordinary.
I just wiped the HDD, and tossed in a random operating system CD into the tray and booted the PC.
The OS?
Ubuntu v8.10.
Verdict?
Holy f***ing S#!T is this made of WIN or DOUBLE WIN?!?
I couldn't make this scenario up:
Installation of Ubuntu takes ten, fifteen minutes tops -and that includes the FORMATTING of the HDD.
Without a single driver installed, Ubuntu says
"Hey, I see Internet! Firefox is pre-installed, so hop on!"
Then I get a prompt:
"Hi-ya! I see there's 227 updates for this Operating System!"
Of course, I almost started to make a keening noise when I clicked the download button... but what's this? 9 MB downloaded per second? I feel a little better about this, so I open a Fox window and start surfing the web...
A short while later, I'm running two instances of Firefox with three tabs each (all Hi-Def YouTube videos), while running a Hi-Definition FULL SCREEN video from a USB-powered THUMB DRIVE on a SPLIT DESKTOP -without even making the auxiliary fan kick on*.
Oh, and the audio didn't even so much as stutter with the built-in media player that instantly recognized the video format as soon as I clicked to open it and downloaded the necessary codecs within about ten seconds.
There's a lot more "CAPSLOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR AWESOME" dialog, but long story short?
Like HELL I'm ever going back to another Windows OS ever again.
Ubuntu 8.10 was free.
They ENCOURAGE you to share the disc with everyone.
Oh, a nice additional fringe benefit? Try "Never getting a virus or spyware ever again." The way the system is set up, I would have to try very hard and know what I'm doing to get my PC fuxx0red up.
*: Normally the aux' fan kicking on is akin to a morbid obe's wheezing while doing that weird lumbering jog that they do in their muu-muu of shame. With XP, this basically means whenever I have Firefox running a single Youtube tab, and I click on the Start menu button by accident somehow (audio/video lag for 10-30 seconds) then the menu pops up and pops back down because I tried to abort... etc, etc, etc.
