On a scale of one to ten, my current longing to lie in the sun for hours and hours and hours: roughly a 93.

I had this goal of doing a real End of Summer post 1) with, I don't know, a collage or even at least just an activity write-up/list, 2) before school got under way, but well, here we are. For-real school started-with-kids the beginning of this week, preschool starts Monday. Close enough?
I'm going to credit the frappuccino, because that bizarre chatty-small-talking, easily sociable version of myself came out from wherever it hides for our meet the teacher open house tonight. T always teases me about my frapp addiction, and I told her I was just going to drink an entire four pack for Monday. A joke a:t the time, but it seems fairly reasonable now. Three at least, anyway.

If we're looking for an official demarcating event between Lazing In The Sun and Work, it'd have to be the annual local literacy society sale, so.
a: Third year I've gone, and it's (of course) always worth it. You don't have to spend much to end up with an armload (I think I spent $12 last year?). L and I got there early and primed (but not cracked out (see also: Lurlene and Betty Sue Darla Jean)). Had intended to hit the 7:30 early bird opening (and by god I was up, literally, on time for it), but it had a door charge, so we decided to save the funds and wait until 8:30 with the rest of the crowd. Look, a collage!
Top to bottom: fellow early non-early-birders; view of one of the three wings; weed-out. Right: from the 1975 edition Childcraft Look and Learn volume. I love the angry elephant, but absolutely nothing beats the distraught pig's fabulous “oh no!” expression (hello, icon).
Not pictured: the early birds wheeling out large, multiple suitcases.

In the end: four hours, $15, 17 books. Thus:
Not pictured: 1975 Childcraft Make and Do, and Good Night, Gorilla! board book for Toddler P.
This is not that post, but I remember reading Arthurian kid book after A/k/b, looking for something, and not finding it, or even knowing what it was, until coming across MZB's (now extremely unreadable) Mists of Avalon: hello, re-envisioned Morgan le Fay and Mordred (favorite characters)! It was everything I didn't know I'd been looking for. Then I developed some discernment, and many years later can whole-heartedly and unreservedly recommend (1) Elizabeth Wein's The Winter Prince, for a truly superb Mordred-centric version, and (2) Phyllis Karr's The Idylls of the Queen : Malory x detective novel + (cranky and sarcastic! <3) Sir Kay as said detective = bow howdy, yes.
Red spine: yes, I bought a second copy of The Mixed-Up Files: nice trade version with extra art and history end notes! I really need to add it to my Top 16 10 list.
I know my mother loves me because she has not yet tried to kill me with any of the yet-more-books I continue to bring home.In closing: Dragon*Con. SEVEN DAYS. Excited! Not ready! Oh, my.
