Trek: what else?

Naturally a whole bunch of ST:XI and Penny/Sheldon fic would go up right as I need to walk out the door and then be away from the glorious internets for a weekend. I am not addicted. I will not go through withdrawal and the five stages of desperation and neediness.

I've been meaning to post a heads-up/link to selenak's Trek meta and the handful of ST:TNG episode reviews she's been doing lately ( her TNG tag; she's been doing basically season highlights, so there are a lot of excellent, concentrated reviews of episodes like Sins of the Father, various Q ones, The Best of Both Worlds, Chain of Command, etc. So, uh, there it is. Anyway, she also has a post on the Mini-skirt Issue:As this is one of the more debated side issues of ST XI, I thought I'd offer a quote from Nichelle Nichols, the original Uhura, on the subject:

"In later years, especially as the women's movement took hold in the seventies, people began to ask me about my costume. Some thought it was 'demeaning' for a woman in the command crew to be dressed so sexily. It always surprised me because I never saw it that way. After all, the show was created in the age of the miniskirt, and the crew women's uniforms were very comfortable. Contrary to what many may think today, no one really saw it as demeaning back then. In fact, the miniskirt was a symbol of sexual liberation. More to the point, though, in the twenty-third century, you are respected for your abilities regardless of what you do or do not wear. I'll tell you one thing: I would not have worn those silly high-water bell-bottoms with the ruffle on the calf the guys had to wear for anything."

(From her autobiography, Beyond Uhura. [...])

Comment discussion points out that women on TOS did wear pants occasionally (I know one of the minor bridge crew does in "Where No One Has Gone Before"), and I remember at least one background woman wearing them in the movie. Which is not to say that, and leaving aside all discussion of objectification and etc., in a given situation, one example can negate or offset all other evidence, but the pants are there. And from a totally subjective viewpoint, I am pretty susceptible to and fond of'60s/mod fashion, so.
