Guess which country in the Western world has just shut down it's locale version of CNN to start to broadcast a "Big brother" 24-hour channel.
You are right, Spain.
CNN and Canal Plus Spain (Sogecable) had created CNN+ as a new 24-hour news channel. Canal Plus Spain was always related to El País, so this was progressive media (quite Socialist indeed). When the country switched to DVB, CNN+ was accessible for everybody for free.
Fast forward: Sogecable and Telecinco (yes, that TV station which belongs to Berlusconi, Italy's Prime Minister) join forces because the TV market in Spain sucks. Spain's largest producer of junk TV (all the realities work here and now it's all programs about celebrities) basically absorbed non-paid Sogecable services. As a result, CNN+ was too expensive to be kept and they have kept the multiplex signal to broadcast GH24, a 24-hour TV station for Gran Hermano (Big Brother), which now is at the 12th edition, I think.
The twitterverse was sad to see CNN+ leave. When the right wins the election, no major TV will be in Progressive hands in Spain.
