I told both sons when they were young that what they chose to do with their lives didn't matter to me. What mattered was that they became the best they could be.
The oldest son is a knife-maker by advocation and this is one of his recent creations. He designs and shapes by eye - perfectly.
He started blacksmithing when he was 12 or 13 by making a forge from an old charcoal grill and using a blower from a vacuum cleaner, and he just took off from there. He always wanted to make knives, rejecting the profit he might have made from hand-forged collectibles. Just knives.
He's being true to himself, and with the skills to make from raw steel, ivory, and wood such beautiful cutting tools as this, I'm pretty sure he'll make it big-time - being the best he can be.
