I know it is a bit early to promote for an event on Saturday, September 17th, but I wanted to ensure people had enough time to search through their “stuff” and help us with our mission to help the hurricane victims in the Gulf Coast region.
Shag Frenzy is an indie disco night in Hartford, and music is our life. Music is such a powerful medium, but the comfort it gives us in troubling times is its greatest gift. We could have done many things to help the victims of this tragedy, but found music to be the logical choice.
Kimya Dawson of the Moldy Peaches is coordinating the
Relief Through Music effort, seeking donations of new and used music devices - mp3 players (loaded with music), boom boxes, portable cd players, headphones, and even CDs. These items will be distributed to the young victims of Katrina residing in shelters and temporary housing (including the Houston Astrodome). Many people might have this stuff collecting dust around the house, replaced by a newer ipod or mp3 player.
If you do not have extra cd players lying around, bring batteries. If you don’t have the extra cash for batteries, makes some mixtapes or mixcds. Shag Frenzy will use the proceeds from the night to ship these items to Houston and Baton Rouge for distribution to the young hurricane victims.
We will be collecting at the Webster Underground during the Jonny Lives! show, and during Shag Frenzy. Stop by to see Jonny Lives!, and stay to dance to the best indie music DJs in Hartford. DJs Garage Flower and Johnny Strangler will be packing the floor to songs by the Faint, New Order, David Bowie, Gang of Four, the Killers, new Franz Ferdinand, Misfits, the Clash, and more.
