Life. Here and far away.

I know, holy bejaysus, a serious post for once that isn't fanfic! It's been a while.

A quick update on me: Work is what it is. I try not to let it get to me, and when I notice it is bringing the serious bitch out (too often to count in a day these days), I try and take a few breaths during a walk away from my office to calm myself. Maybe Gram's death has made me more sensitive to the absolute bullshit there or maybe things have just gone more mo-bat-shit crazy since her death. Possibly both.

A visit to Cape Cod is upcoming for a very long Veteran's Day weekend. PEEPS! Vet's Day weekend (Nov 11-13) are the LAST Free National Public Lands Days for the 2011 YEAR! Go visit a national park, historic site, seashore, wildlife refuge, forest, etc!!!

BUT Prior to that, is the weekend of 5-6 Nov... and my friends and their 2 kids from CT are coming for a visit AND my friend, her husband and their kid will be up quite close too! We are all headed to the 40th Annual Pancake Breakfast put on by my village's Volunteer Fire Department! I have not been in YEARS. And the kids get to see the trucks and stuff! CT peeps have a 2.5 yr old boy and a 3.5 month old girl. LI peeps have a 1.5 yr old boy. Shall be fun for all!

But now for the real reason I wanted to post!

Twin and I have been following a journalist and photo-journalist who have worked for the NYTimes. They are Conflict Reporters.

The Journalist is a former Marine, now a senior writer for the NYTimes, CJ Chivers. He has a Blog and a Twitter. He's covered a ton of conflicts all over the world and was for a time in Libya... which where he was when I first picked up his work. He also writes for the At War Blog of the NYTimes a lot. He was interviewed for an article in Esquire back on August 15th. It's short and quick, but very hard hitting and full of excellent quotes. :-)

In connection with him, was his photographer at the time, Bryan Denton. He has a Twitter and a Blog. He spent 6 months imbedded with the Libyan rebels and his photos are amazing... capturing all sides of conflict no one even things about. What really caught me, though, was his discussions about his photos and his time there.

Bryan Denton has an exhibit at NYU's Department of Photography and Imaging right now showcasing his photos from 6 months in Libya. ET, the evil one she is, gets to go check it out. Sadly, those of us not in NYC won't see it... but the Corbis Blog did an article on the photos with explanations from Mr. Denton. It's an amazing read and the reason I wanted to post. Read it. Yes, the subject matter isn't cute baby animals. It's harsh and violent. But it's also reality for far too many. It's also tender and it's life.

ETA: This is why most of my twitter is made up of news sites, science sites, and not a lot of tv stars. CJ Chivers retweeted a tweet from Lauren Wolfe ( Twitter) who is a female journalist and the Director of Women Under Siege, a project on sexual violence and conflict. Ms. Wolfe tweeted about 2 photojournalists currently capturing stories of survivors of the Guatemalan Genocide and the genocide in the Congo. Ms. Wolfe talks about them at her blog.
