Prayer

I am not a religious person, and my Jewish education is extremely limited. At the same time, I respect religion and spirituality, and I believe that if you are going to say the holy words of your people, you should know them, and feel them, and NOT READ THEM FROM A SCRIPT.

My rabbi had asked me if I could recite a Hebrew blessing at the MLK breakfast, because he could not be there. There was no one else who could do it, and someone had to represent the Jewish community at this event. I have never done this before, and I really cared about getting it right, because what a sin it would be to look ignorant about your own traditions in front of people.

I was proud, to go up there and sing my prayer, as if I had done this for my entire life. And proud to show how this Hebrew blessing would be the appropriate one for an MLK breakfast.
