Further Travails

It was cold this weekend and I can't build a fire yet, so I spent even more time than usual in my host family's main house trying to communicate with the granddaughters (the grandson is pre-verbal, but he smiles a lot). We watched dubbed Tale of Desperaux (you can still hear snatches of English and its a pretty simple plot), chopped every vegetable that I could name, and took long naps. Then one of them squirted me with water and I locked her in the outhouse briefly. Twice I rushed over to the TV thinking I knew what was on, but it turns out that a psychic show borrowed the X-Files theme and a local kids craft show uses the Itchy and Scratchy song. Which is a shame, because I'm fairly sure Mongolian Simpsons would far excel the latest season in English. I heard drumming outside and ran out hoping to see something like a parade of Buddhists. Instead it was a group with a sign and jackets that said Overseas Volunteers. I did not try to speak to them because I'd had enough wacky misunderstanding for one day.

Recently ran into some missionaries from the States, we disagreed on the pronunciation of our current location. We mock-teach groups of 10 students some days, it is the most fun I’ve ever had teaching. A friend lost her shoe down her outhouse, and I was able to watch Princess Bride with my cohorts.
