Hunger Games Script Review

Mar 24, 2011 13:18

So... I was lucky to get my hot little hands on a copy of the script for the Hunger Games movie yesterday. The draft I read gave writing credit to a Billy Ray (not Suzanne Collins). I have to admit, my interest in THG has waned considerably since Mockingjay. I really haven't cared very much who they cast as Katniss or Peeta (though I do have a bit ( Read more... )

Last night I mostly just skimmed the script, but I plan to sit down and read it this weekend. I also really liked the way it turned out, for most of the reasons you've described. Since I can't remember details right now, I'll just do a few bullet points ( ... )

skimmed this mostly to avoid ~spoilers~ but i'm SO SO GLAD gale is going to be a boss (there is pretty much nothing that could delight me more than GALE AND HAYMITCH HAVING A CONVERSATION HOLY SHIT) and that you liked the script! i sort of really want to be fannish about thg again but sometimes it is hard :(

Honestly if you've read the book, then you pretty much know what happens in movie (lol) but Gale's additional scenes/adventure was a great surprise! His speech to Haymitch is really epic (even tho part of it is Katniss's internal monologue on their backstory/how they met from the books).

I know what you mean about THG. I read this and then a fantastic Gale fic at the mockingjay comm and got briefly really excited again.

holy shit, having read it i am head over heels for gale again <3____<3 (lol instead of posting actual thoughts anywhere you get them here! xD)

it looks so good, seriously! i really enjoyed all the early kat/gale stuff and especially gale with the avoxes (i ship gale/lavinia now, otp forever), and also gale and haymitch, because yes. i did wish there was more gale, too, but i get why there wasn't ( ... )

Right? GALE! And his epic adventure of GALENESS! I'm a little sad it seems less romantic on the Kat/Gale side...but knowing how it turns out...eh?

Seneca Crane indeed! It's actually going to be tough for Snow to top him I think!

That's true about Peeta. Although...I don't know, I never really doubted his feelings in the book. It seemed clear he was pining for her the whole time and even the running with the Careers stuff was to help Katniss win possibly. I think they just substituted the drawings for the bread in a way (altho he does still give her the bread in the marketplace, but that's a little more casual/less epic, than the flashback/when they were kids stuff.)

I actually disliked the drawings scene because it forced Gale to be like "he loves you and you should trust him." Ugh, the third movie is so going to have some kind of scene where Gale is like "he's the better man, you should be with him" BLEGH. Hate that martyrization at the end of love triangles.

Okay, I didn't actually read the whole thing because it is late and my eyes are tired, but I wanted to comment before I got distracted. (And I am so jealous that you got your hands on this, Tara. How can I manifest script-nabbing powers?)

It makes me SO much more excited about these films knowing that the POVs are going to be expanded beyond Katniss'. I think you're aware of my issues with her limited perspective, but if not, well, I have them. ;) I'm THRILLED that we get a spotlight on two of my favorite characters (Gale and Haymitch) because dear lord do I love them more than I've ended up loving Katniss.

Also: She breaks down sobbing at one point? AW HAYELL NAH. Frak that noise. Ugh. I really should have expected the movie to soften her and play up the K/P romance (so not my cuppa) but that tidbit tips me over into irritation. Oh well. I kind of won't be watching this movie for Katniss anyway, I've realized. All about the society and the reality television and other characters over here.

And now I am off to sleep.

It adds a lot to have the other perspectives! Really opens things up.

The breakdown felt a bit much to me. I bet Lawrence could convey the emotion without needing to go that obvious with it, you know? Overall, she's not that soft, but she didn't seem quite as hardened (to me anyway) as Katniss seemed in the books.

You should email me, maybe. ;)

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I have a lot of mixed feelings about what you said happens with Gale. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO FEEL ABOUT IT.

On some level I like that he is more prominent, but on the other level it's such a huge change and I don't know if I love that. I always kind of felt like his inability to help her during the Games is part of what makes him so actively rebellious in the next two books. He's making up for all that he couldn't do, you know?

See I liked it. For one thing, his journey is pretty risky and I think it sets him up well as a man of action. Someone who isn't content to just sit by and wait...

This is why I feel so torn! Because on one hand I can totally see where the decision came from and I can totally see myself making the same choice if I was writing the screenplay. Because it's just plain more interesting to see Gale DO something during THG instead of just pining for her. And it makes sense for his character. I think I will just have to get used to it.

In other news, I have been thinking for awhile about a Jo/Gale fic where they meet before Mockingjay (and maybe Katniss doesn't survive her Hunger Games and maybe a tribute from D7 does and Johanna and her tribute in effect become "the mockingjay"...IDK)...and maybe just maybe I might be inspired by this spoiler about Gale heading to the Capitol during Katniss' Hunger Games...

MAYBE.

Wow you're so lucky to have gotten to read the script. Do you think they're going to revise it more before the final cut?
Now, I'm a fan of Katniss/Peeta and I can't believe they messed with the bread scene. I knew that it was going to be tricky showing Katniss pretend to love him in the Games but I really wanted to see her start to care for him in the caves, not just when they are paired together.
Gale's storyline sounds kinda cool and I like him showing up in the Capital before Mockingjay. In the movie, I assume it is so we won't forget about him so easily. In the first book Gale is there but for the most part he's only thought of by Katniss. If they want to play up the love triangle, he would have to have more of a presence.
How does the trackerjacker scene sound? And Cinna and her styling team?

I think I read yesterday that they start shooting next month? So this is probably close to final, though I'm sure some stuff will change in process of making the flick. It's a really good script though and there's nothing I could think of them cutting ( ... )
