Manga Recommendation: Karneval

Jan 17, 2011 22:16

I almost didn't read past chapter two of Karneval, because I just wasn't feeling it at first. But then I told myself I needed to at least read the first volume (six chapters) before even beginning to pass judgment. So then I come to chapter four, and see a man in a cat suit using lollipops as weapons, who turns out to be a flaming man-child (one of my favorite character-types). Then I get to chapters five and six, which are chock full of cute black sheep sentries saying "baa" and a completely random game of hide-and-seek on a ship run by a governmental defense organization.

My non-sequitur sensors on full alert, I continued reading, and have found this manga full of emotion, mindf*ck ideas, circus performers, and occasional poetic turns of phrase like, "If I was melted by this light, I would shed tears at its warmth." I never imagined that a series containing human-eating monsters and guys in top hats would have so many moments of heartwarming sweetness. 27 chapters have been scanlated into English so far. I highly recommend it.

Some sweet, sweet images...

Could I be wrapped in bunny ears, too?

Time to brush the bunnies...Nai is such a kind boy...

Every story needs a good-looking guy with street smarts who is short on social skills...Gareki...

Jiki collects foliage and Nai has an animal on his head. I'm down with that...

Yogi hugs a warmth-exuding snowman...

Yogi and black sheep...

Top hats! Kick-ass girls!

Circus Performance...oooh...ahhh!
