Hello from (just outside of) St. Louis!
starlingthefool and i've just finished day 2 of the BGRT2 and we're holed up in the first hotel we came to that didn't look skeezy. Hooray!
Yesterday i got a couple hours' sleep after work and then we rolled out around 3:30, once the snow stopped. We got
trolled by the town of Mt. Horeb, which was kind of weird, had our obligatory Culver's stop for fried cheese curds, dipped our toes in the Mississippi--or would have, but it was still frozen up at Dubuque, so we just kind of tapped the ice with our toes--and then crashed at the ever lovely
amyamy's apartment. Which was awesome; i had figured that she and
starlingthefool would get along, but it didn't really occur to me until they were actually in the same room that they actually would click pretty darn well (and they did). They both ganged up on me when they realized that i hadn't seen RED and then showed it to me and now i will write all the fic, and then we showed Captain America to
starlingthefool so that she could understand
amyamy's and my Steve/Bucky ~feels.
I totally slept like crap last night for no good reason, so i'm operating on something like six hours' total sleep since Thursday morning, so i made
starlingthefool do all the driving today. And it turned out to be quite a lot of driving, too. We left
amyamy's and headed to the Iowa 80, which bills itself as the World's Largest Truckstop (thus checking off 'World's Largest _______' on our Big Gay Road Trip Bingo cards). Purchases were made, although we refrained from buying any giant truck lights or military pins (even though the 'one shot one kill' one was tempting) or hog-themed t-shirts. Then we headed off down the
Mississippi River Trail. We crossed the river a couple of times and saw a lot of industry (which at one point prompted starling to say "i feel like we're driving into a Monsanto version of Mordor"), a massive storage facility (in the very weird, creepy town of Quincy, Illinois) built into the side of a rock face, a bunch of bald eagles (!!!) and, y'know, the Mississippi. We stopped for dinner at the Mark Twain Dinette in Hannibal, MO (the hometown of Mr. Clemens) and had homemade root beer and Maid-Rite sandwiches, both of which were delicious. And then we (well, starling, since i was the useless sleep-deprived lump of space in the passenger seat while she did all the driving) managed to not hit any deer in the hilly, wooded, curvy road between Hannibal and St. Louis. Oh! And we pulled over about 20 miles south of Hannibal and looked up at the stars, and you guys, wow. It's been a long time since i've seen so many stars. It was gorgeous.
And now imma take some benadryl and sleep allllllllllllllll night long, yo. Tomorrow we're headed to the
City Museum here in St. Louis, where we plan to play like little kids all day long, and then we're headed to Memphis, yo. *boogies*
Hopefully i'll have more exciting updates tomorrow, yo.
