I loved my final week at the Edinburgh Fringe - more walking, more sightseeing and lots more comedy shows. But I was glad to leave as I was eventually suffering from Fringe Overload: this picture gives some idea of the multitude of events that are taking place in the city every day:
And this gives you some idea of how important the reviews are - this board is at one of the main fringe venues, The Pleasance Courtyard:
My final Friday was great. I went to a wonderful show - Josie Long's Kindness and Exuberance - which made my face ache from smiling at the loveliness of it all. Later, I popped into Sainsbury's and saw my first book, Grievous Angel, for sale at £4.99 next to Dan Brown and Ruth Rendell, which excited me more than I can say.
On Saturday I came down to earth. I drove for seven hours to a small town called Lydney, near Gloucester - close to the Welsh border in the Forest of Dean. I was supposed to be doing some stand-up comedy there. The gig got called off before I did my stuff - punters in the bar were complaining that they'd rather hear the jukebox than jokes. The atmosphere was leery, to say the least. The other comics told me that this is as bad as it gets. Me? I quite enjoyed the ridiculousness of the whole evening.
