Moss stitch is just like Ribbing, which is also k1, p1, but you follow the stitch above it. Examples of ribbing you might be familiar with is the cuffs on woollen jumpers - they have those vertical in and out stripes to them.
With ribbing or moss stitch, you have to transfer the yarn from back to front or front to back after each stitch. So you will start with your yarn at the back (to knit), knit a stitch, then transfer the yard UNDER THE NEEDLE to the front and purl a stitch. It is vitally important that the yarn is transferred under the needle or you will create what looks like a new stitch which you will then add to the patttern and produce a great big hole in your work - not classy.
Excellent, thanks, I've got it now. I think I was trying to take the yarn OVER, instead of UNDER.
Also, I was trying to switch to new yarn in the same row. I did one row of purl instead, to change colours and *then* did Moss stitch. I think that made it a bit easier.
