So I got this email from Tri Delta today:

How Delta Love Makes Us Stronger

This just in: Connecting with your sisters will help you live a longer, happier and more fulfilling life. It’s a proven fact! In a recent study of how women handle stress, scientists at UCLA discovered that a woman’s response to stress goes beyond “fight or flight.” Rather, they found that women “tend or befriend.” Says Dr. Laurie Cousino Klein, one of the study’s authors, “It seems when the hormone oxytocin is released as part of the stress responses in women, it buffers the ‘fight or flight’ response and encourages her to tend children and gather with other women instead.” While the woman engages in the “tend or befriend” response, more oxytocin is released, countering stress and producing a sense of calm. This calming response did not occur with men.

Not only does friendship help mitigate stress, it helps us live longer. One study showed that people with the most friends over a 9-year period cut their risk of death by more than 60 percent. The results of the study pointed researchers to the conclusion that not having friends was as harmful to your health as smoking cigarettes or carrying extra weight.

Quality of life is also improved when women have close women friends. The Nurses’ Health Study from Harvard Medical School found that the more friends women had, the more likely they were to be leading a joyful life.

So, making the connection not only strengthens the bonds of friendship, it strengthens the lives of you and your sisters as well. What better reason is there to plug into your sisterhood and express some of that Delta Love?

I guess I'm going to die young and stressed. Unless the Isles win tonight.
