Here and there, together.
"I hate you."
Thursday night in the middle of December. Jaejoong juggles three plastic bags of groceries, his signature label black manpurse, his apartment's keys and his cell phone. On the other side of the line, Yoochun lounges over a couch and vaguely explains why their outing has been cancelled. Family visiting from abroad, he mumbles. Jaejoong grumbles and fumbles and shoves the key into his apartment's door.
He kicks the door open and upon stepping in, somebody shouts and shoves a furry black thing at his face and scares the living shit out of him. He shrieks like a girl and clutches his phone to his chest, closing his eyes on instinct. Every muscle on his body clenches and he can feel his feet rooting to the floor.
There is silence for a few seconds, and all Jaejoong can hear is Yoochun's concerned hyung, what happened? on the phone against his chest and his own breathing. The next thing he hears is a strangely familiar chuckle followed by roaring laughter. Damn, he knows that voice better than he knows his face in the mirror.
When he opens his eyes, a man stands in front of him with a puzzled cat in his arms. He's laughing from the heart, Jaejoong can tell from the tiny slits his eyes turn into.
It's Yunho, and the older singer is torn between glaring at him and running to him and kissing him senseless. Yunho chooses that moment to hold his cat's paw and lift it up.
"Hello Jaejoongie," he says in a high-pitched voice, moving Jiji's tiny paw up and down, "we missed you."
Kiss him it is, decides the other man. He drops everything he has and hangs the phone after whispering a little "call you later", and shortens the distance between him and Yunho in a blink of an eye. It's been a month since the last time they saw each other in person.
"Liar," he says, leaning over the cat to peck Yunho's mouth without crushing the animal between them, "I'm sure Jiji didn't miss me at all."
Yunho smiles against Jaejoong's mouth. A little chuckle gets trapped between them as Jiji struggles to be freed, so Yunho lets him go and takes the only step left between them, enveloping Jaejoong in his arms. The older man relaxes against him, forgetting the initial scare and bringing his hands to caress Yunho's cheeks. The kiss deepens in the comfort of their warmth, mellow in the silence of the apartment. It would be perfect were the door to the apartment not open.
A noise coming from outside startles Jaejoong, who moans in protest when Yunho whispers "the door is open" against his lips. He decides to ignore the offensive piece of furniture, but Yunho pinches his sides and laughs, and he frowns before pulling apart and break the embrace to close the goddamn door.
"Happy?," he says when he finally turns back to his lover, all mock concern and half hearted scowls. Yunho simply smiles. The happiness he is admitting to is reflected in his almond-shaped eyes. Even if just once a month, even if a few hours every once in a while, being in each other's company makes everything else fade away.
Jaejoong finally picks up his stuff from the floor and leads Yunho to his kitchen. He places the groceries on the counter and turns back to the taller man.
"You're lucky to find me here," he says as he takes some vegetables out of the bags. Yunho takes the place by his side and helps him sort them out, "I was supposed to go out with Chunnie tonight."
Yunho hands him over a bunch of potatoes, and Jaejoong can see a smirk forming on his face.
"I know," he says, matter-of-fact. The smaller man gasps and hits him with the danmugi he was holding.
"Sneaky," he accuses. Yunho looks smug for a few seconds, until the danmugi hits his face again and wipes the smirk off it.
"Only for you," he declares. He knows how much Jaejoong dreads his cheesy side, but after a month's worth of un-Yunho-ness, he seems to be willing to put up with it. The older man laughs easily, mouth open and head thrown back, while Yunho looks at him with a smile. They put everything away quickly in comfortable silence and walk back to the living room once they're done.
Yunho takes the spot next to Jiji on the couch and strokes the pet's nape softly. Jiji looks like he's plotting murder for a moment, but ultimately decides he likes the feeling of Yunho's fingers against him as much as his owner does, so he stretches and purrs and lets Yunho pet him lovingly. As for Jaejoong, it puzzles him that Jiji seems to like everyone except him, so he pouts and dramatically drops on the couch next to Yunho, draping his upper body against his lover. Yunho's other hand goes to his head instinctively, caressing his scalp. Jaejoong closes his eyes and they stay still for a while, content with simply being in each other's presence.
"How long do we have?" says Jaejoong after a long while. He would think Yunho might have fallen asleep if not for the rhythmic movement of his hand against both Jiji and Jaejoong. The dancer's breaths are slow and soothing, and through the silence, the older man can hear the steady beating of his heart. Yunho takes a little to answer, drunk in the peace of the moment, a quietness they can seldom afford.
"Tomorrow," he whispers, reaccomodating his chin against Jaejoong's head, "10 am or so." He tries to stay still again, but feels Jaejoong fidgeting under him and opens his eyes again. His lover lifts himself up and crawls over Yunho, looking at him with a silly smile and hopeful eyes.
"Really?" he whispers, voice borderline pleading. This would be their second full night together since the group's split, and Yunho knows how much it means to Jaejoong that he could make it happen. Despite how much they enjoy their three hour escapades to hotels or vacant apartments, a full night at home is definitely something that could be compared to Heaven by their book.
"Really."
A rare mix of emotions cross Jaejoong's eyes. Yunho reads each and every one of them and leans forward, allowing him to crush them together. He lets Jiji go and wraps his arms against Jaejoong's waist. They kiss fiercely, deeply and passionately. Jaejoong pushes Yunho back and he falls, an arm trapping Jiji underneath him. The cat shrieks and jumps out of the couch, giving the two humans a murderous glare, but his owner can't seem to care less. He pushes Yunho further into his couch and moans loudly when his lover's hands sneak into his pants and pinch his ass. It's all quick and desperate from there: their clothes fly away and they make love in the loudest, messiest possible way. After that they stay on the couch, sated, lying together. It's Yunho's head against Jaejoong's heart this time.
"I missed you too," Jaejoong finally declares. Yunho snorts against his chest and pokes his ribs.
"I realized," he answers. He rises his head and faces Jaejoong, his chin against the singer's chest. Jaejoong's eyes are vacant, grazing the ceiling. He's lost in his thoughts. "What are you thinking?"
The older man stares a little bit more.
"Nothing in particular... just thinking about things. About you and I, mostly. About loving you and... that."
Yunho stares at him in silence, and he finally leans over Jaejoong's face.
"I love you too," he whispers before kissing him. They make love one more time.
About an hour later they sit at the kitchen counter and devour a gigantic bucket of fried chicken. Jaejoong hogs the death sauce all to himself and Yunho lets him.
"Congratulations, by the way," says Jaejoong. He looks at the piece of chicken in his hands and decides where to bite next. Yunho looks at his face and his tongue licking his upper lip and gulps before going back to his own piece.
"About what?" he asks, vaguely.
"I heard you guys are having a comeback next year." His voice is nonchalant and Yunho decides his tone isn't accusing or anything.
"We are," he says without looking at the other man, "it's been a while, so we have to prepare a lot," he pauses, "to be honest I have mixed feelings about all this." He lifts his eyes to meet Jaejoong's, and he finds understanding in the other's gaze.
"Me too," he says, "but I know how much you love to perform, and I know how much you've worked to keep on doing it. Yunho-yah... even if we're not there, we are there, you know."
Yunho nods, feeling strangely relieved. Was he fearing Jaejoong's reaction to this?
"I actually can't wait to see you dancing again," the singer adds with honest excitement. "I always loved to see you dance so much..."
Yunho nods in silence. "Also..," he says, "I didn't know how you'd feel about this."
Jaejoong shrugs. "I am more concerned about you being in Japan and we not being able to meet, actually. I want you guys to succeed. I'll buy a thousand copies of the single if necessary."
With a strangled laugh, Yunho does something akin to blushing.
"And for my birthday no less," continues the older man, "I already told Yoochun he must get me a signed copy of the single as a present, so be sure to make it difficult for him to get it."
The open way in which he talks fills Yunho with immense happiness. Even if we're not there, we are there. He feels reassured in a way he didn't think was possible. Yes, they would come back, and they would show the world what they were made of, just like JYJ had.
"I'll let Changmin know you said that," he says, when the emotions he's going through allow him to talk without choking. Jaejoong nods.
"Please do, and tell him I really miss him... and that I love him. And that I congratulate him. And..."
Changmin hasn't been on the best of terms with the three eloping members since their parting, but Yunho knows how much he misses them even if he isn't anywhere near admitting to it. He listens as Jaejoong's list goes on, but soon shuts him up with a chicken-flavoured peck on the mouth.
"I'll tell him."
"Thank you," Jaejoong whispers. "You take care of our group until we figure this out."
"We will."
They kiss again, until the flavour on their mouths is disgusting enough.
"I love you," Yunho declares. Jaejoong pecks his mouth in lieu of I love you too. They clean up and after a quick stop at the bathroom to wash their mouths, they go to the main bedroom to kiss and make love like madmen until the sun comes out.
They kiss again a thousand times before parting the next day, sharing I'll miss yous and I'll love yous, to make up for the time they'll spend apart.
"I'll try to make some space for Christmas," says Yunho, tenderly caressing Jaejoong's jaw, "but I can't promise anything."
"I know, I know. I'll be here. If you can call me, it will be enough."
Yunho kisses him one last time, long and lovingly.
"Love you," he says.
"Take care, leader. Love you more."
The last thing he sees is Yunho's hand waving and disappearing behind the door. He sighs. It's 9 in the morning and he feels tired and sore. He stumbles to the couch and sits down in the only clean part, wincing when his ass hits the cushion. Jiji watches him and jumps over him. Jaejoong's skin is warm and Yunho's scent lingers on his whole body. Jiji finds this acceptable and nests himself on his owner's lap.
"You like him too, don't you?" Jaejoong asks out loud. Then he thinks to himself, what is not to like?
Jaejoong closes his eyes and falls into a peaceful slumber. If only for days like this, he'll hold on to whatever he can, until the day they can finally be together as one.
