I love me some teen horror movies. Though Dan hated the movie and complained bitterly, I don't care -- I liked it. It was terrible in all the right ways.
First of all, Amanda Seyfried is in this movie. She's a fantastic actress who can bring life to any script, which is immediately evident from scene one (now I need an icon of her face saying "Kicker"). No joke, the film is worth it for her alone. In fact, the movie is packed with random good young actors, most of whom I know from TV. Also, Megan Fox: pretty hot in this movie. Normally her sexyface is distracting but here she looks good.
The movie's themes run on classic horror-movie lines: female sexuality, toxic relationships, high school. The film does a good job of navigating those themes, as well as showcasing the toxic-female-friendship thing that really does go on in high school. I've been on both ends of that, and it's not until you get out of it that you realise it's a really creepy dynamic -- good job on Diablo Cody for exploiting the inherent weirdness there. Is it an 'empowering' or 'feminist' movie? Eh, maybe. But it's also a goresploitation flick with lots of Megan Fox skin-flashes so you can overthink it or underthink it and either way it's enjoyable. Splatter factory is moderate. The movie has some good lines, Amanda Seyfried would make the whole thing worthwhile anyway, and you know -- getting to the end of the story is not entirely predictable. And it's a fun ride.
If you do not like terrible B-movies, you will not like Jennifer's Body. But if you liked movies like The Craft or Heathers (heavens!) then give this a shot. It is a fun, enjoyable Brain Junk Food movie that also has some great acting (mostly Amanda Seyfriend) and some genuinely funny and freaky bits. It knows what it is and is good at what sets out to do.
