Got into excited mode last night over an RPG I played at the club - Bliss Stage is a game designed to bring out the rp oppurtunities of being teenage kids in an emotionally charged giant robot anime - yes it is kinda a weird premise but it actually works! The basic idea is that you the world has been taken over by an alien race that attacked us from our dreams, all the adults have entered a state known as Bliss, and can do nothing but sit in a vegitative state, leaving those under 18 to defend the earth. These aliens can only be fought in the dream world, and using mecha weapons and armour built of peoples emotions, of their relationships with their friends.
This sounds silly, but works if you suspend your disbelief a bit - All this sets the game up for a split between action oriented insanity in giant robots, where wounds tear down the relationships of the characters, mixed with lots of cool interpersonal RP where you try and build them back up and deal with the reality of what the combat did to each other. Indeed the quality and type of rp you do outside the fights, allows you to actually gain points from good rp, as judged by the other players. This encorages some really intimate, exciting and fun rp, and in a longer game I can see this becoming some really awesome fodder for arcing plots and tension, especially as in the combat phases the characters lives are in each others hands.
Definitely A game I wanna play more in some form.
