New Year. Fresh focus.

Mark 4:18
The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things.. making it unfruitful.

Yes, balance:

( "We do not remember days, we remember moments."  But we also
remember dates, deaths; past conversations at times of year. Lest we forget.)

Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it,
and produce a crop - some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred
times what was sown.

The very act of acceptance is key:

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
... I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
