http://www.cbc.ca/arts/music/story/2007/02/12/copyright-law.htmlRecently, Fox studios threatened to delay future film releases in Canada due to piracy, saying Canada is the country of choice for people who videotape movies and then distribute them online.
I thought that was China and other parts of Asia? Don't they have actual shops that sell nothing BUT pirated films there? Where does Fox get their research anyway?
I think the joke about copyright law and how these big corporations are freaking out about pirated content always end up shooting themselves in the foot. All these new constraints, copy protections and search and destroy missions for illegal file sharing software always lands these companies shooting themselves in the foot.
The kind of people who perpetuate and distribute pirated films, music and whatever, always have the resources to get past whatever copy protection, and whatever the industry gets rid of five new things pop up.
The average Joe computer user doesn't know dick until the media (who is, in most cases, controlled by these record/movie companies) report about all the latest gadgets and things that someone can go out and download.
Do you think the amount of people who used BitTorrent increased or decreased when it finally made the news media?
Would people even know that there was a way to get past copy protection on DVD's or that there was a need for the industry to do so? I mean, you guys keep on shooting yourself in the foot man.
If you stop telling people there are ways around your copy protection, or what to use to get your movies for free, they're not going to figure it out. Because 98% of the internet population is full of idiots and retards who couldn't find their assholes with both hands and Google.
The people who pirate videos and movies and whatever on a regular basis, the people who write programs to share files, or get past copy protection, are usually smarter than your average web viewer and will most likely never get caught... Usually because nine times out of ten they live in a country where there really aren't any laws that they are breaking.
Another thing is all these ridiculously law suits. Suing single parents for their kids downloading a hand full of songs, or going after YouTube or MySpace because people happened to post copyrighted music or videos on these sites.
With each new attempt, I usually just shake my head, it's starting to get really sad. And perhaps maybe the industry hasn't realized that perhaps the reason why they aren't making as many billion dollars as they thought is because people don't want to watch their shitty movies or listen to their shitty music?
THAT couldn't be the problem could it? I *HAS* to be those movie/music pirates 100% of the time!
But then again, what the fuck do I know about? I buy my movies. But on the other hand 98% of those movies aren't from the major movie houses. So I guess I'm part of the problem too.
The other thing I'd like to point out is that copyrights should become limited like they used to. There's a fine line between making money and blocking something that can be preserved as part of our culture. I think that we should get back to making films, music, and writing part of the public domain after a certain amount of time. I'm not one to argue the cultural significance of Justin Timberlake (Because there isn't any except for the argument that future generations can learn what TOTAL shit sounds like) but after a certain amount of time (and when the artist is long dead) their work should become part of the public domain. By law.
Also when did we start getting antsy about The Fair Use clause in the copyright act? Fuck, entertainment industry calm the fuck down.
Assholes.
