Music of 2009

Here are the purchases of my year. I know that most people think my music taste is crap, but too bad. Hehe.

Britney Spears: The Singles Edition
Sure, I already have all of her songs, but sometimes you just feel like buying your favorite guilty pleasure. It’s not like she doesn’t have any money... hehe.

Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand
I really don’t know much about Franz Ferdinand, but I was inclined to buy this album after reading many positive reviews about it. Matt loves it and listens to it all of the time. Don’t be shocked if I name my first born son “Ulysses” just because I love this song.
Songs to Download: “Ulysses” & “No You Girls” & “Can’t Stop Feeling”

Imogen Heap - Ellipse
I fell in love with Imogen’s voice the first time I saw “Garden State” and heard her song with Frou Frou. Her voice is so lovely and ethereal. I have never heard anyone like her before. The girl can’t dress for award shows to save her life, but she has an amazing talent and incredible style. My favorite song on the album is “Swoon.” I also very much enjoy “Bad Body Double” because it speaks to me.

John Mayer - Battle Studies
Even though I still give Mr. Mayer the award for worst concert performance I have ever seen, I still buy his albums. Even though I am convinced he only writes songs of, “why do girls hate and leave me?” I still get suckered into his “cuter-than-you-gay-face” and must buy. It comes down to this, the man can sing and play the guitar and be sexy while doing it, (although I can’t watch him sing with his bass fish mouth.) Sex sells me. Sure most of his songs are about how hard it must be to date stupid celebrity chicks and be happy being lonely, but I still get him. I am convinced he is the best kisser in the universe. And for the record, “Assassin” is the best song I have heard from him in a looong time!

Lady GaGa - The Fame
I am a FANATIC for Lady GaGa. I would go gay for Lady GaGa. If Lady GaGa had a reality show, I would apply and try to be her best friend. What is her magical pull that she has over me? She has extremely crazy taste, she dances like me, and wears solar shields. Lady Gaga and Jennifer = FOREVER. This album BLEW UP this year, and I really gave it a chance in the winter of ’09. I fell in love with all of the songs and all of the videos. I don’t know if I can pick a favorite! I would say “LoveGame” and “Paparazzi” were my favorites of her huge hits. (It didn’t hurt that the hottie hottie hottie vampire from “True Blood” was in her “Paparazzi” video. As for the songs on the album that haven’t gotten any radio play? I would choose “Boys Boys Boys” and “Paper Gangsta.”

Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster
The minute I heard there was a new Lady GaGa album coming out in November, I pretty much peed my pants. I got the deluxe version which included her hit “The Fame” since I had listened to it so much, it got scratched. The minute I saw the “Bad Romance” video, I was all about the dance. All of the songs represent specific fears or “monsters” if you will about her life being famous. The obvious monsters are there like love, breaking up, alcohol, bad relationships, and death. Her “Speechless” song about her father is very good, but it is not my favorite. “Telephone” with Beyoncé is going to blow up the charts. I still think “Bad Romance” is the best song of the album, but I also enjoy “Alejandro” and “Monster.” The only song I didn’t really care for was “Teeth,” and that has now been changed.

Little Boots - Hands
Little Boots became my British obsession over the year. I am a sucker for electronic pop dance music (which you can’t find in Indiana... booo) I think she was overshadowed by other pop stars like Katy Perry and even Lady GaGa. She’ll hit it big sometime. If she doesn’t, I’ll still dance in my underwear in the kitchen to her songs.
Songs to Download: “Stuck on Repeat,” “Meddle,” & “Remedy”

Shakira - She-Wolf
So, Shakira may not be the best singer in the world but the girl can really rhyme. How many singers can you think of who can get “lycanthropy” in a song? This album is just ok, but the music videos are money. Unless you can see Shakira gyrate and flex her body all over the place, then there is no point. I do love her and always will!

Third Eye Blind - Ursa Major
3eB was one of my favorite bands while I was in high school and in college. I don’t know why their music speaks so much to me, but it reminds me of how I used to view life and the world. All I needed was my mini-disc player and my 3eB discs. We saw them in concert over the summer at the Murat, and I was very surprised that there were so many young kids there. (And of course Stephen Jenkins had to wear a monk suit no less!) This CD is good, but not great. There are some fan favorites that they have been playing for years on the concert circuit. I can swear I heard “Bonfire” in the early ‘00s.
Songs to Download: “Bonfire” and “Can You Tell Me”

Fave Song of the Year
V. V. Brown - Game Over

I don’t know how I found this song or saw this video, but it has been by far my favorite thing of the year (other than “Bad Romance” of course.) If I was a singer, I would do something whacky like this for my video. Horse feet boots? Spikes? Betty Page hair? Roman helmets? Ball gowns? Check, Check, and Check!
