So I have a dilemma… Do I continue to buy clothes that I know are made at sweatshops or do I refuse to do so and boycott by buying all my clothes second hand or from union labels. Here’s the thing.. am I really doing anything by protesting? If I buy one less pair of Nike’s is that going to make them change their policy, or will it just make it so the people that make those shoes get paid even less and abused more? There are some big offenders.. Nike, Gap, Wal-mart, but what about the rest of them? What about the companies that hire 9 year olds but don’t whip them? Or what about companies that manufacture their clothes in China, where the government seems to be getting more like North Korea by the day? Should I continue to buy what I want (American eagle, urban outfitters, old navy, etc.), or should I think about my fellow humans that are the faces behind these clothes and how I can make an impact on their lives. The bible says to treat your neighbor well, like you would treat yourself. I would want someone to stand up for me if I was working in a sweatshop. Just because I can’t see this neighbor and don’t know their name, doesn’t mean I don’t still have a call to treat them well.
