Photobucket appears to be compressing images, days after I uploaded and without informing me, resulting in a drastic reduction in quality.

It's been going on for a few months, but at first I thought it was my old dialup browsing accelerator deciding to turn itself on and caching a low-quality image. Then when I figured out that it was actually Photobucket, it was just too DNW to deal with. I have almost a thousand files there. Pretty much all of my eggs are in the Photobucket basket. ARGHHH.

This was the background of my lj layout. Here it is as it's supposed to appear:

And this is how it appears a few days after being uploaded to Photobucket:

(the same image, hosted at Imageshack, in case the Photobucket version continues to degrade. Although who knows what kind of compression Imageshack uses, for that matter.)

A few weeks ago when I was trying to figure it out, I saved the compressed version and re-uploaded it under a different filename, and this is how it looks now, after having apparently been compressed TWICE:

(the same image, hosted at Imageshack)

This file started out as 5.83KB. Let me repeat, THIS IMAGE WEIGHS LESS THAN 6K. And it was reduced to 4. (On re-uploading, it was reduced to 2.) If it were, say, 347K and compressed by 2K to 345K, the loss of quality probably really would be negligible. But THAT IS NOT THE CASE OMG.

This is a gif, so I don't know about jpgs and pngs. The same thing is happening to the background image on my lj profile (also a gif: before, after). It might have something to do with the number of hits the image gets? But I'm using 0% of my account bandwidth, and just 9% of my storage space.

I can't find information anywhere, except this forum post. So I ask you, has this happened with you? And if you come back and tell me that no, they look fine and it's just something wrong with my computer, I will actually be ecstatic. I'll feel dumb as a box of hair, but I'll be ecstatic. The thought of going through all my files and comparing them and moving them and fixing broken links...

ARGH.

[ETA: It's not just me (see comments; more angry posts that pop up in google). And I see that it's six months that it's been going on. I win at denial.]
