Music rec

I just found this over the weekend, and I've got it on repeat right now. Heather Thomas' "The Gun." I sort of want you to just experience it fresh, without any context, so I'm linking to her myspace rather than her lj post. Click "The Gun" in the media player, then come back and click the cut.

I don't follow much fannish music as a rule, like filks or wizardrock. But I do have a real soft spot for the occasional fan song. I think I've mentioned a few here before, The Greenskeepers' "Lotion" [Silence of the Lambs], Aqueduct's "As You Wish" [The Princess Bride], Ryan Adams' "Arkham Asylum" [Batman].

"The Gun" is about Supernatural, specifically the season two finale. See her post for dl and the lyrics. What I really love about it -- apart from how haunting the melody is -- is that the lyrics are universal enough to be metaphors. The ghosts, the knife in your back, saving both of our souls. But in fact they're not metaphors; they're quite literal, and the fact that she let us in on that makes it even sweeter. I mean:

...we don't touch
we haven't since the day you came back
with a handprint on your heart
that didn't match mine

How pretty is that.
